Nero Video/Nero Recode suddenly not working anymore

An incompatibility with a recent Windows update will cause Nero Video and Nero Recode to crash on startup under certain circumstances.

Affected versions are Nero 11, Nero 12, Nero 2014 and Nero 2015.

Nero is investigating this issue now and will try either to solve the issue or to provide a workaround.

Stay tuned for an update here.

    • Just so you know, I'm a volunteer, not a nero employee. I've been through this numerous times during the nearly eight years I've been helping in the forum on a daily basis. It doesn't really matter to me if people switch to other software. I just try to help people with the Nero software.

I don't see in the forum where you've posted about your Nero problem. You also don't indicate if you've gone to tech support.
    • I fully understand Wither. But also understand that I am trying to warn people off who would otherwise waste their money on software that doesn't work and has no support. I just wish somebody would have warned ME. I bought Platinum 2015, Tune Up Pro and stashimi. None of them work right and are pathetic. Hopefully others will be saved by MY loss.

I don't know if you have tried anything in the links provided.

This is a temporary fix provided by Since5.5, a Nero Employee-

"Dear all, we found a new workaround that will allow you to use the latest driver package 15.7.1 (display driver 15.20.xxxxxx). However, before applying this workaround, please note that AMD App Acceleration (Hardware accelerated H.264/AVC encoding) won't be available afterwards.
To apply the workaround please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ATI Technologies\Multimedia\ and rename the file ‘atimpenc.dll’ to something else e.g. ‘atimpenc.BAC’.

At least one person reported success by going to Catalyst 15.9 Beta.

  • Hi Jona,
I had a problem with Nero Video too with Intel and Nvidia on the same system.

    These tips worked for me:

    Hello Lucky Phil,

in the most cases the NVIDIA graphic card device is recognized as "Render-Only Device" which may the cause of the reported problem. (as shown at DxDiag-log)

Please change the used graphic card device to the integrated Intel graphics and try again.

To change the graphic card devices please change the settings as following:

    1. Open the 'NVIDIA Control Panel'
    2. Select 'Manage 3D Settings'
    3. Select the 'Program Settings' tab
    4. Click 'Add' next to 'Select a program to customize:'
    5. Select 'Nero Video' under the list.
    6. Click 'Add Selected Program'
    7. With Nero Video selected under option 1; change option '2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program:' to 'Integrated graphics'.
    8. Select 'Apply'
    9. If Nero Video is open, close it and restart the program.

    • My graphics card is an nVidia GeForce GT220 ver. 9.18.13.418, date: 8-17-2015. I have previously tried rolling the driver back but no luck. My processor is an Intel i7 860. Any suggestions as to how or where to look for turning on other graphics devices? Thanks!
    • Googled that one and Intel say the Intel® CoreTM i7-860 Processor does not have Intel HD integrated graphics capability unfortunately ... so perhaps experimenting with Nvidia drivers will be the answer ...

Just checking the Nvidia site and for your card, the latest driver is:

(If your system is windows 7,or 8 64 bit) ...

      GeForce 341.81 Driver
      Version 341.81
Release Date Mon Aug 24, 2015
      Operating System Windows 7 64-bit
      Windows 8.1 64-bit
      Windows 8 64-bit
      Windows Vista 64-bit
      Language English (US)
      File Size 269.73 MB

      http://www.geforce.com/drivers/result...

I don't know if that would make any difference though :(

  • This is all fine and all but Windows 10 does not allow you to turn updates off. They are mandatory and automatic. My main question is that Nero tech people know about this and are working for a solution. I'm patient.

    • Hi Michael,
I reverted to an earlier video card driver on my Windows 10 Laptop and I got away with it as far as Windows update was concerned ... it didn't try to update again over the top of it.

So perhaps downloading an older version of the driver will fix your situation.

If you visit the support webpage for your particular computer, you may be able to download and install a driver designed particularly for your computer, which will perform OK compared with the driver that Windows Update forced upon you.
    • I'll try the older driver. I built this computer so I have the drivers that came with the card. It's possible it neither a Nero or Windows problem per se because I did notice some problems with other stuff when I upgraded to this version 15 AMD driver such as my steam games. That is exactly why I posted to this forum. Thanks for the feedback.

    • You would have when it first came out. Windows 7 as Vista that they fixed all the bugs more or less. Same Kernel. But the name Vista had a taint. In all fairness most of it was not Microsoft's fault. But indirectly it was because they never gave ATI or Nvidia "final" releases to work with. Even congress investigated it. I've been using Microsoft products since DOS 3.1.
    • Yeh, they finally got it right with SP2. I also started with DOS 3.1. In fact, I think I still have the installation floppy.

    Windows 7 Ultimate x64, Radeon R9270x, and Nero 2014:
Nero Video and Nero Recode would error out on startup per the original posting, which is how I found this thread. Did an AMD Clean Catalyst uninstall using the AMD utlity to eradicate Catalyst 15.7.1, and then installed Catalyst 15.7, after which Nero Video and Nero Recode now work fine.

    Note regarding Nero 10:
I have another Windows desktop PC running Windows 7 Professional x64, and Nero 10. It was updated to Catalyst 15.7.1 at about the same time and can confirm that Nero Vision and Nero Recode both work without any problems.

I'm dismayed that this thread is several months old, that the problem has been acknowledged and replicated at Nero, and yet nothing has been done to solve the problem beyond a "workaround" dropping back to an earlier version of the Catalyst drivers!

  • Well no reply from NERO wont be recommending anyone get Nero 2016 as it also has same problem's and as for Video drivers it seems to be affecting not one but many ATI, GeForce, Intel Video cards and drivers.
I tried today a total uninstall of NERO from computer I also did a Manual update of all System, and Video drivers, Reinstalled Nero and back to same problem.
checked with 2 friends and they have same problems 1 on 2015 other on 2016 and problem does not seem to effect Data and Image burning...
Its a Video Rendering / Video Burning problem and needs a fix or Patch,

I have used NERO for many years and this is the first real problem for me and I hope they will come up with a fix because its no good saying go to Nero 2016 if that's also got the same problem and Windows 10 was in pipe line for sometime,

I normally update my software around 6 months after a new version is out, and expect the company to at the minimum keep the old version usable for the 1 year after a OS Update, with a Patch or Fix and hearing that even this years version 2016 is not working right, I feel Nero has got some work to do to stop them self's from loosing there Great Name.....

    • Its not just AMD as I don't use AMD drivers or card so you were lucky but a lot of us using different video and cards still have problem
    • It was the same when Vista came out. Everything pointed to Vista and hardware problems. But it was Nvidia and ATI drivers that accounted for over 90% of the probs. Windows 7 was Vista with a new name and drivers that work. So I'm wondering if it's maybe a Direct X 12 issue?

  • I installed 2016 Platinum some 6 weeks ago , initially all good but about 2 weeks ago problems with video , recode and mediahome developed.I uninstalled Nero 16 but it left mediahome ,not working, so I downloaded the trial version today and installed it and so far I have excellent results. The only thing I don`t know is will my trial version expire ?
In Control center it says I have the trial version and a valid 2016 serial key that does not expire.
I am running Win10Pro with AMD Radeon HD7800
Driver Package 15.201.1151-150821a-188665E without Raptr as this seemed to solve some problems.
Can someone advise me if I need to add my genuine serial key to the trial version.
Also don`t know yet if audio and video sync is fixed.
    Thank You

    • Yeah, I've just been sitting here playing Company of Heroes 2 Ardennes Assault on Steam with Nero Video and Stashimi all running in the background and stashimi running as many as 15 downloads simultaneously. Not a hiccup. Before, I couldn't run any two of these simultaneously without the system locking up. I like what I'm seeing so far. Also, this new Crimson AMD suite has a new Catalyst interface. Looks like I have to learn a new one. At 56 I AM kind of tired of THAT.
    • Geez, I'm 71 and in here every day learning about these new things. I don't have anything AMD but your response will help others. Thanks.

  • In an attempt to conclude this topic please let me try to summarize the situation.

    1) The issue discussed here only exists with AMD display cards (it is not related to NVIDIA cards)
    2) The issue is fixed since the latest online update for Nero 2016 - Nero Video 17.0.12000, Nero Recode 17.0.10000, Nero Disc2Device 17.0.1007, Nero MediaHome 1.34.800
    3) The issue is caused by changes in the AMD driver (it is not related to Windows 10, but was first noticed there and only one workaround is available for Windows 10)
    4) The issue happens also with older Nero products e.g. 2015, 2014. We are not planning to provide a fix for those, but there are the following workarounds available:
4a) For Windows 7/8: If you still want to use AMD App Acceleration (Hardware accelerated H.264/AVC encoding), we recommend to install a previous AMD driver version (version 14.12) . Unfortunately this does not work for Microsoft Windows 10.
Please make sure that you have also disabled the automatic updates at the "Raptr" and/or "Catalyst" software. On the AMD website, you can manually enter the display card model and OS for searching the current driver. Please find the link "Download Previous Drivers & Software" on the right hand side at the search results.
4b) For Windows 7/8/10: If you want to use latest AMD driver (15.xxxx), please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ATI Technologies\Multimedia\ and rename the file ‘atimpenc.dll’ to something else e.g. ‘atimpenc.BAC’. However, before applying this workaround, please note that AMD App Acceleration (Hardware accelerated H.264/AVC encoding) won't be available afterwards.

I hope this summarizes it well. Thx for all the contributors to this thread and sorry for all the hassle.

  • I had this problem and thought I would try and reinstall Nero2015_ContentPack-16.0.00300. When I did this it failed when trying to install Visual C++ Redistributable Packages. I went to the following location and download the 86 version and let it repair my installed Visual C++ Redistributable Packages. Once
I did this I was able to install the content pack. I think the Visual C++ Redistributable Packages repair fixed it but not sure.

You have been working on this problem for 5 months and are you any closer to finding a solution. How can you expect anyone to purchase Nero 2016 when you can't get 2015 to work. We are still in 2015 and you had 5 months to fix. Please give us an update.

    • Since5.5 It can not be understood that a main component of your software doesn't work and that your recommend is to spend additional money. The work around listed above are not clearly laid out. A person without a technical background is going to be lost. Expect persistence negative feedback from your former user base.
    • This is exactly why I bought another companies software. Nero isn't worth buying anymore and there is basically zero support. I just bought 2015 Platinum on 4/17/15. It hasn't worked fully since I bought it. Now, they tell me if I completely buy a NEW Suite it WILL work. WTF? The piece of JUNK I already BOUGHT hasn't worked yet and you are trying to sucker me out of MORE money? No, seriously, see I only LOOK stupid, that's why I went to PowerDVD. Their software works right out of the box, whether you're running Windows 7, 8.1, or 10. Regardless of whether you're running AMD or Nvidia GPUs. Nero just can't write software anymore and they won't get another cent from me. I've been using Nero since 7. You need to find THOSE people and bring them back whatever the cost, 'cause what you have now is junk. Pure, non-operable junk.

  • I’m Undecided
I will look at the work around, but I am not that technical and not sure if I could perform those steps correctly. However, I would like to know if Nero 2016 would have the same problem with Windows 7 without this work around. If not then would there be special upgrade pricing for users of prior versions of NERO that no longer work. I can see paying something for new features on NERO 16 but feel that my current version should have more life to it. Also, if I can modify the drivers, I will be sacrificing updated functionality of my sound card so that I could make my video editing software work. If I was to get NERO 16 would it work out of the box on my windows 7 machine?

    My System is as follows:

    Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit, AMD Athlon II X4 640, 7.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 664MHz, M4A78LT-M (AM3) Motherboard, AMD Radeon HD 6670

AMD Catalyst Control Center Version: 2015.0715.2138.37093

    NERO 2015 Platinum
    .....................................
Haven't used Nero for a few months apart from burning a few ISOs to CD/DVDs. Recently (14DEC2015) went to use Nero Video and after it started it stopped with the following message:

"Nero Video has experienced a serious problem and must close immediately.
Do you want to save your project before closing?
    [Save] [Don't Save]"

Tried installing 2014 version but same problem. Don't know about Recode since I don't use it much, but I hadn't noticed any problems with other software.

My video card was one of the ones recently declared Legacy by AMD so at best I could change over to Crimson with a Beta driver set and no further updates or stay where I am at present. Due to that I did as Bernie Bermac noted and renamed the file ‘atimpenc.dll’ to ‘atimpenc.BAC’. I can alwways change it back if it causes problems elsewhere, or make a batch file it I'm doing it too often.

    Nero Video now working.

Wasn't convinced that purchasing 2016 version would be my solution and was/am very annoyed since I only purchased 2015 version in May 2015.

I've added this note in case it is useful as many of the posts were lacking full system details or talking about Windows 10 updates.

    • I had Platinum 2015 and upgraded to 2016 because all of the problems were supposed to be fixed in 2016 (As per tech support) Instead I have the same basic problems and like others here I have quit using NERO altogether. I only read these forums to see if any progress has been made. That way others can waste their time trying to solve issues instead of me. I have given NERO far too much of my time gathering diagnostic files for them etc... to no avail.
    • I hear you Greg. The last version of Nero that worked right was 7. When 8 came out it was the same time Vista did. There were LOADS of driver issues with AMD and Nvidia. Nero tried to tag along and make it seem like that was the problem with 8 too. I think it's because Nero just isn't very good software. Most of the functions that you used to NEED Nore for can now be done natively in Windows. When you buy a Platinum suite with a stand alone Blu-Ray player you expect it to play Blu-Rays. I've got 2015 Platinum. Pure junk. Bought Tune It Up pro too. Screwed my system all up. Had to uninstall it. Bought Stashimi. Unstable junk. Though the idea is good once a real software company programs it right. So I bought PowerDVD 15 Ultra. Installed it and BAM, worked right out of the box. Nero? Don't make me laugh.

  • @Nero Support -

I am running with the latest Crimson drivers 15.300.1025.1001 (prior version did same) using Windows 10 with an AMD Radeon R290 and I can't get the hardware acceleration to work at all.

After literally just purchasing Nero 2015 Platinum in November, I find that it seems Nero support has this all working great in Nero 2016 and have abandoned Nero 2015. Perhaps you could then give me a free upgrade to Nero 2016 to resolve my issues of no hardware acceleration? Did Nero decide just to work around the issues in 2015 by disabling hardware acceleration and not applying the same fix as with 2016?

  • I had purchased Plat 15 in early July and had almost an immediate fail. Have been going back and forth since. Not sure which agency regulates this but to take money and not provide the product or service seems in violation at some level. If you offer graphics software and don't appear to work with current AMD or Nvidia hardware and software, it may be a good idea to stop selling the purported product and do some home work. It seems that we as consumers are looked upon as an inconvenience and are entitled to service at the pleasure or not of the offending corporation. There does need to be alternative method to remedy this flawed arrangement. Nero seems to be fairly bold in their unwillingness to provide the product contracted for purchase. Hmmm.
    • Yeah, a class action lawsuit might just be in order with complete full cash refunds for all products. Nero really used to be trend setters in the field. Just like Norton once was with Disk Doctor back in the 90s. Nero has become a joke. It's these new "smart" kids schools are turning out. Completely incompetent. Guess it's time for some legal lessons too.

I am trying to convert ALAC music files to AIFF with Nero Recode. I keep getting an error message saying Nero Recode "cannot transcode source file because it is not valid or damaged." A few days ago a similar recode of mine was more successful. I am new to Nero and do not understand this message.

  • The problem seems to be connected to mp4 exports, after conversion by nero and you try to play the file,it locks up the operating system and complains that its caused an error with an ati graphics driver, sometimes it may report it has recovered ,but most of the time it crashes the system and only a reboot will get you up and running again ,I'm running the latest win 10 with a Ati R9-380 series card with driver 15.300.1025.1001 ,I have tried different drivers but get the same problem,I thought it was a win 10 problem ,but in the end it is a definite conflict between ati drivers and nero.Have had this problem now since my upgrade from 8.1 to 10 from September last year and cannot fix it.

  • The AMD Crimson seems to fix the problem for most people. Nero said above that it has been fixed in the update to v2016 but it won't be fixed in earlier versions. I don't like that approach any more than anyone else (it's my biggest pet peeve about Nero) but, that's their decision and they're sticking to it.

  • And THAT Conrad Venter is exactly the point I've made. I dropped this junk that is NERO and went to Cyberlink. It's actually much better software and they provide excellent support. Power DVD blows home media away. As does power2go. Nero used to be an industry leader in ROM burning software, but they've become a footnote now. Norton, back BEFORE Symantec, was also the best of the best with their Disk Doctor. Now, they too are a joke. My Platinum 2015 was sold with a module called Blu-Ray Player. This does not, nor has it EVER worked. This is called fraud. I'm not going to play NERO AG's game. I've contacted the Texas Attorney General's office and reported the fraud. I'll let them decide.
    • Just to be fair, the Nero Blu-ray Player works fine on both of my systems and for most other people. Like so many of the problems reported in the forum, they are system specific.

I like you're comment about Norton. I have Norton 360 on three systems and it does about as well as the System Doctor. However, when I uninstalled Norton SystemWorks Premier from one system, I retained the System Doctor and it runs once a week. On the other hand, the older versions of Norton had a quirk where, if it detected a virus or malware, it wouldn't tell me until the next day. Norton 360 does that immediately.

  • I'm talking about the Doctor from back in the 10MB harddrive days. It gave you unfettered access to the mechanics of the drive. I an old mainframe engineer. Like CDC 3300s and IBM 370 type stuff. The factory firmware on the older drives left a lot to be desired. You could use Doctor to recover drives etc. It was more hardware oriented. That's kinda always been my gripe about Windows. When I first started in computers we didn't HAVE keyboards OR monitors. You had BCD switches and light registers grouped in BCD. You really had to be up on your Octal game. If the computer needed to tell you anything it did it on a line printer. Yes, having keyboards and monitors is handy, but they've used them to turn COMPTUERS into entertainment centers. Every extra scrap of processing power and they turn it all into fancy hoo-haws that don't have squat to do with computing. Again, Norton used to access all the mfts and firmware of harddrives and allow you to manipulate them.

    • Again, the algorithm was created by Stacker. In that era, Microsoft (who bought DOS by the way and not wrote it) would see different apps that worked well on their OSes and would then either crush them out of business (Netscape) or simply gobble them up. It's why Windows (and even DOS) have so many problems, because it was all done so ad hoc. I actually had the Beta for DOS 7.0. It was never even released so Microsoft could force everyone into a GUI.
    • That's like Norton. I remember having a little program which, I believe, came from Adaptec and launched during system startup and allowed one to elect to restore their system to a previous point. Then, all of a sudden, it became Norton GoBack. That was replaced by Norton System Save and Restore in my Premier edition of Norton System Works.

  • Nero crashes during startup and encoding issues.

"AMD Accelerated Video Transcoding" component is the cause included with AMD Catalyst.

*Display driver is not the cause*

Save time! Do not uninstall all AMD Catalyst, only uninstall
"AMD Accelerated Video Transcoding" component and Nero should work.

And update to radeon-crimson if you want to, this would still work.

    or

Uninstall old version AMD Catalyst completely and install radeon-crimson, this still works.

"AMD Accelerated Video Transcoding" component is the the confict. I don't AMD AVC component in radeon-crimson.

This is to help save a lot time for anyone who is trying to figure out the problems because I spent a lot time myself tearing up the pc and install and uninstall win 7. I have Nero 2014 Platinum. I have same problems. If you have AMD Catalyst Manager installed. Uninstall AMD Catalyst -> select custome -> components to uninstall -> select only "AMD Accelerated Video Transcoding only. This should solve the issue when use Nero Encoding and Transcoding and startup problem.

Thanks for the tip, but instead we just uninstalled NERO. Cyberlink software runs fine. NERO is officially trash.
    • hehehe..I feel your frustation. Now I figured out the problem. I am not going to spend money for other the software and may have to deal other problems. I don't have time to waste.

Not to mention I got BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death).

Hopefully, the tip will save another Nero software owner the time and frustration.
    • Well, you may have found one cheat for one problem. But you had to disable the advanced parts of your system to do it. As a mainframe engineer for the last 39 years I'm stating to you that you didn't figure out anything. You simply turned off part of your system. Why did you buy it if you're not going to use it? Take your graphics card out and use onboard integrated graphics instead. Because you disabled what you added on. That's the problem with people who don't know what they're doing. They think by disabling parts of their system that they have corrected a problem. No. It's when you can make that part WORK that you have corrected it. That is also why I told you cyberlink's software works. Because it USES acceleration without crashing. Because it PLAYS Blu-Ray discs. Which NERO certainly does not. I've never had a BSOD with NERO to begin with. So if you are having them I think you may have other problems as well. NERO simply can't make their video software play Blu-Ray or use acceleration in Windows 10. It worked in 7 and 8.1 though not very well. Cyberlink's works in all modes and with all software releases. THAT is what is being said. NOT that you can disable parts you paid for an get by.

  • Its not just Nero Burning Rom that is broken its every program stashimi does the same thing. Opens then get a message from windows 10 that there is a problem causing it too stop responding and windows in its infinite wisdom is closing the program and not saying why
    • Jimmy, I have Platinum 2015, Stashimi (paid version) and Tune up pro (also paid). Platinum never worked from day one. NERO AG's only response was to disable the best parts of my system. The hardware acceleration. So why would we bother to buy them, right? Stashimi is disturbingly slow. As it sits there for MINUTES trying to remember who it is and you try an input you will get a message telling you it is not responding and giving you a choice of waiting or closing program. Wait. It does take quite a while but EVENTUALLY it will respond. NERO is junk. It didn't used to be but it is now. When they got all the complaints, such as the fact that Blu Ray player won't open Blu Ray media, they stated they would fix it, but only for the 2016 Version which had just dropped. Those of us who had bought 2015 directly FROM NERO through Cleverbridge were just stuck out even though it had NEVER worked and we only had it for a few months. But make sure you have the very latest video card drivers installed. Go to the manufacturers website to get them. Such as AMD.com. And I wish you luck. Ordinary users usually don't possess the skills and knowledge to get online and fetch and install all the various drivers needed to correct problems such as these. But again, it appears that NERO cannot figure out how to program for DX12 and hardware acceleration in Windows 10 and are basically suckering people out of money for software they know doesn't work. I've scrapped mine and NERO has lost a paying customer for life. Companies on the verge of going under seldom worry about these things, they just grab all the quick cash they can grab. I have had ZERO problems since scrapping NERO and installing Cyberlink's software suite. It does it ALL. And uses hardware acceleration and doesn't take forever either.

    • Me too, Jackass! Two guys having a pissing contest is not what this forum was designed for, so I'll be the gentleman and let people who come here get the information they are looking for. Up until now, your opinions, along with everyone else's has been a help to me, but you have now exposed yourself and devalued your comments. I have obviously struck some nerve in you and hurt your feelings. Y'all carry on and again, hopefully some good people can pass along good information that will be of value to others. By the way, I'm 54. Now, I'm getting back to work. You have a nice day!

  • I hope this may help people?

I had exactly the same problem as lots of others, and I found this work round. Worked for me, been using it since December 2015. I burn every day and am on Microsoft Windows 10 Preview builds (Fast Ring) so get lots of Windows updates and NERO Vision still working Fine.

To apply the workaround please go to

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ATI Technologies\Multimedia\ and rename the file ‘atimpenc.dll’ to something else e.g. ‘atimpenc.BAC’.
    • That has been a work around that has worked for some. Others, such as myself have been able to at least get video and recode working by installing the latest AMD Crimson drivers. This is however no fix. NERO won't use the hardware acceleration. It also won't play Blu Rays. Things it was advertised to do. NERO is aware of the problem. Their solution was to refer me and others to this forum and stated that the problem HAS supposedly been fixed in 2016 but that they have no plans to update 2015 even though most of us had only had it for a couple of months before the problem surfaced. So they told us to BUY 2016 to fix our non-working 2015. Nice, right?

    From Bill Mills:

renaming the ‘atimpenc.dll’ file worked for me, thanks

    Hi Bill,

There does not exist an atimpenc.dll file in my Nero folder. I did a Windows Explorer search as well as a "dir atimpen*.* /b /s" search, but no results.

I uninstalled all AMD drivers as mentioned above. Then reboot.
I tried out Recode and it worked fine.
Then I downloaded the latest AMD drivers and installed.
Reboot and everything is working fine.
