I’m frustrated

Nero video project much bigger than movie maker project with the same content

I imported a movie maker project into Nero Video to improve it. When exporting as avi file or when burning the project on an image disk (before burning it on a dvd), the project is much bigger (49 Gb avi file or between 10 and 20 Gb nrg file) than the Movie maker project (4 Gb avi file) although the content is the same. Why?
All my other Nero Video projects are too big as well.
When I change the quality or choose DVD instead of AVCHD for the disk format, the film quality on my Full HD TV is not good enough.
Is this caused by the high resolution of my photographies ? If yes, what would be the solution?
I can't find any detailed explanation in the Nero Video manual.
I now have Nero Platinum 2018, its manual doesn't contain better explanations.
I'm getting fed up with trying all burning options to see which one is best.
Thanks in advance,
Anna

  • I have had the same experience as you. I made a concert video in AVCHD format, which was to big to send over the internet. Then I converted the video to mp4 format which was allmost as good as AVCHD but much smaller. I have done the same with a AVI video with the same result - so try to convert the video to mp4 in Nero Recode and then use Nero Video. The reason mp4 is smaller is because that format gives a better compression of the video file! Hope it will help you!

  • Thank you very much for your reply.
Yes, this might be a solution, I found this solution elsewhere on the internet. But I would prefer to find one solution to simplify all my projects.
In fact, I'm using Nero since 2006 and I never had problems before 2012.
I use Nero only to build private projects containing my holiday pictures and videos.
And there are so many methods and formats for burning a project that I just can't find out what is the best way to get a simple Nero Video project, made of pictures and some very small videos, without menus, which is not bigger than a cinema film but of the same quality.
The Nero Video manual gives all the formats, but doesn't explain how to choose, it just says that your choice depends on your needs and that's all.
It would be very useful to know, for example, which format you should choose for a simple film on dvd to be read on a large full HD TV screen.
I make this suggestion to Nero AG at the same time.

  • I guess everyone have the same needs to get better understanding of all the different formats and codecs - and what to do with them - its really a jungle. About the formats does this link maybe help a little:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_f...

Codecs are explained here (but are not easy stof):

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec

Maybe this is better for codecs::

    https://www.lifewire.com/what-exactly...

I had a problem some years ago, where I was introduced to K-Lite-Codecs (link: http://www.codecguide.com/). I have ever since downloaded the Mega pack to be sure - but whether Nero uses these codecs or they only uses those included in Nero is hard to now. The VLC player, which is mentioned in the lifewire.com link, can you also download from K-Lite - so I suppose that player can use them, if there is trouble with other players.

I guess above links can give a hint, why it is difficult for the Nero folks to explain which format to use!

  • In Serif, the export box gives a brief description of which format to use depending on how you wish to proceed with the file.
