Nero 9 says a 25GB BD-R disk does not have enough room for a 23GB disk image

I'm trying to copy an uncopyrighted bluray disk using Nero 9. The message plainly says there is 23GB of data to be written but says there is not enough space for that on a 25GB BD-R disk.

What is all the more perplexing is the original disk is a Optical Quantum 4x BD-R disk which I burned myself and I am trying to copy it onto an identical disk. Ergo, if it fit on the disk in the first place, I don't see why the copy wouldn't also fit.

  • The message says there is no space available on the disc you're trying to copy to. Are you sure that disc is empty? Does it open in Windows Explorer?

  • Thank for the reply Wither. I thought it was. This is what it shows in Windows Explorer. It showed a single file. My first thought was the first burn attempt may have ruined the disk. However, when I put in another BD-R it shows the same file so I figured that was something Windows automatically ads. Those are the only two blank BD-R's I have on hand at the moment. I ordered another spindle of blanks today.

  • I think this may shed some light on it. I found one additional blank and Nero generated the error message on this screen shot.

It would appear the other two disks were ruined by Nero when it failed to burn because this third disk now also has the desktop.ini file on it.

Here is the burn fail log...

  • You have a very old nero 9 version.
First, you should update to latest nero 9 version.

But: It could simply be that nero 9 is to old fro your writer.
So, i would recommend to download nero 2014 trial and test, if it works with nero 2014

  • Jens is correct about your v9. Did you purchase this copy? If not, most likely you don't have the blu-ray plug-in. If you did purchase it, go to nero.com, downloads, previous product downloads. Under Nero 9, go to the bottom of the page to find the downloadable update. Download and save it. Run it. If you have any problems with the installation, you should use the Nero General Clean Tool to uninstall it (you don't use Control Panel to uninstall v9) and reinstall the update. Download and install the template packs.

You should do that regardless but I would also like you to try a burn at 1x.

  • Yes, I purchased the copy and have the activation code. I do not believe Nero 9 is too old for my writer because Ive copied disks before with this drive and Nero 9.

I tried installing the Nero 9 update but that only made it worse. NeroSmart start won't start at all. I only get this error message instead.

I can still launch some of the features of Nero by starting them directly.

I now remember that is why I have an original version of Nero 9. I forgot I upgraded it before and ran into this same problem. I had to uninstall the 9.4 update and reinstall 9 from my CD-ROMs.

Speaking of uninstalling, I tried to do that as Wither suggested however I see Nero General Clean Tool to uninstall it in the attached screen shot....

Wither, can you tell me where I can find this uninstall tool and how to use it so i can do a clean install of the 9.44 update I install today? Is it going to let me "update" a program that I have uninstalled completely?

  • Go to nero.com, support, other products. Find Nero 9. The General Clean Tool is under Support Tools.

The update is the complete program, less the Templates which you also need to download and install.

I can't imagine why you would have a problem in Vista. That's what I have on this system and I've uninstalled and reinstalled v9 several times for reasons unrelated to Nero. I also have v10-v14 installed beside it.

Have you already copied BDs? Or only other kind of media?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Nero 9 says a 25GB BD-R disk does not have enough room for a 23GB disk image.

  • OK, Wither I found, installed and ran the General Clean Tool per your instructions. Then did a clean install of 9.44 and used the serial number from my purchased version so that it did not install in Trial-only mode. It now launches without crashing.

However, I have no "coastered" my remaining blank BD-R media so i will have to wait for the order I placed yesterday to arrive in the mail before I can test it.

Jens, to answer your question, yes, the bluray disk I am trying to copy was burning on this drive using the same Optical Quantum BD-R media I was using to try to duplicate it.

When the blank media arrives, I will let you know if updating to 9.44 resolved the problem. Thanks for your help thus far.

  • Great! I'm glad it's working.

Make sure to try the burn at 1x, as I suggested. If that works, you can work your way up to a higher write speed until it fails.

  • Hi Wither and Jens. I got more blanks in and the cleanly re-installed Nero 9.44 burned the first copy just fine. I did it at 6x speed to match up to the Optical Quantum BD-R's stated capability. I'm trying a second copy of another disk right now. I'll let you know if I have any further trouble but it seems that uninstalling 9 with the General Clean Tool and installing the updated 9.4 version was the solution. Thanks for your help.
