I’m frustrated

Nero MediaHome crashes immediately upon starting while creating thumbnails and the like

I am unsure of when this problem started, but I'm pretty frustrated by it. I upgraded to Nero Platinum 2014 from Nero 12 Platinum, and I was using Nero MediaHome perfectly fine to view and watch TV shows and stuff on my computer, but now all MediaHome does is immediately crash, pop up a Message Box with the title "MediaHome.exe - Application Error", and the Message being as follows: "The exception unknown software exception (0xe0434352) occurred in the application at location 0x76662eec."

After I close that, there is also another Message Box waiting for me to look at from Windows telling me that "Nero MediaHome has stopped workin; A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Since I'm a programmer, I have Visual Studio installed on my computer, and I'm given the option to debug, or simply close the program. Obviously, since I didn't create the program, I don't have the code to view what unhandled exception has happened, and so I cannot resolve this on my own.

I'm pretty frustrated by this though, because I REALLY like MediaHome, and not having it is very very disappointing. PLEASE fix this erroneous error!

You might try reinstalling the C++ 2010 redistributable SP1.

Have you installed any new software lately?

  • Maybe you want to try to move the media library (all files from C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Nero) to a sub-folder (e.g. \old) and to start MediaHome again to check if the problem is caused by the installation or by a corrupted media library. If MediaHome starts after doing this something was worng with the library and maybe you have a backup or you want to build it up again (if you build it up again you will loose all tags, playlists, albums, photo projects etc.).

Wow, SOOOOO sorry for not checking this or following up on this. Kinda funny, I found this again by trying to start up Nero and seeing if it was going to crash again today, and certainly enough, it did. Gave me the exact same error that I typed in here, and I found this topic by doing a google search for it. (MAN google is powerful!)

SOOOOO after reading all these suggestions, I first cut and pasted my Nero folder onto my desktop, and tried to startup MediaHome to refresh that folder in my hidden folders. It ran a "installing updates" little popup, and then successfully started up without crashing. Having nothing in my settings and etc didn't bother me though, because I've got all my music and videos and whatnot categorized in folders. Ergo, I don't use tags or anything. So re-adding my folders to the manual tag generator as an option automatically reorganized everything automatically. Man. I am SO happy to have MediaHome back again. I wonder what was causing the problem? Does this happen often?

Thanks so much though! Sorry for somehow failing to see that you had replied with suggestions for what to do. Everything is working so far though! :-)

  • To anybody: If you have this issue yourself it would be great if you could do one thing ***before*** you apply the workaround suggested here. Could you please download this small ZIP file
    http://nerobackitup.pogoplug.com/s/DW...
extract it to a folder on your desktop and run the .BAT file that is included, This will generate a new file in the same folder called NMH_DB.7z. If you could post a link to this file here it would help us a lot to solve the issue on the long term without having people fiddle around with their media libraries.
Thx a lot for your kind help in advance.

    • Hi Joseph, TechSupport didn ́t receive any answer to the last e-mail that we have sent you on June the 25th. If you do not reply to the last e-mail, we will assume that the problem has been fixed by the suggested steps. If this is not the case, please reply to TechSupport ́s last e-mail, so we can look further for a solution. Thanks and best regards!
    • Hi Yes I did answer the email saying that the solution to the problem offered does not work. Nero assumes that I am an IT technician and of course that is very far from the truth.. I download Nero and it works for a few years and I liked the programme in fact I was ready to upgrade when the problem started. The frame work solution did not do the trick and I emailed tech support but have had no answer.. I am totally disilusioned There must be some sort of remote support after all I realise that I was using Nero Free but I had purchased add on's and was quite prepared to purchase Nero 2014. I have downloaded this the (trial version) but Have the same problem. and uninstalled again I even went to the trouble and expense to have the computer cleaned, Still the same. Nero has a problem with hundreds of customers and it will only mean loss of sales if they do not sort it out. Joe

I am now having this same problem. That sad part is, I WASN'T having this problem until I installed the update that was supposed to FIX the problem.
Is there any way to roll-back from the update so that I can go back to the stable, working version that I had??

It seems that I may have discovered the root of this issue (for me at least).
I've found that if a file has been added to the library (for example MOVIE123.mp4) and I then go and rename the file (for example MOVIE123.mp4 to MOVIE12.mp4), the program crashes when the library tries to update the name and will not recover until you apply the work-around above.
I hope this help the NERO guys to fix the problem once and for all.

    Since5.5,

While waiting, does the renaming of folders trick from over 9 months ago still work if others have this difficulty?

One description of the "fix" is in topic nero kwik media

Is this the same problem reported over a year ago in topic kwik stoped working windows has to close?

I'm curious to know how many PCs Nero normally tests their software on before releasing it? If it took six PCs for this problem to "finally" show up, that may truly "explain" a lot!

I bought yesterday nero Platinium 2014 and just upon launching media home I get a direct crash. I never used media home previously or have a library. Telling Windows to debug the crash in Visual Studio gives this:

Unable to cast the type 'System.Int32' to type 'Nero.Framework.MediaLibrary.FaceGroupSortingMode'. LINQ to Entities only supports casting Entity Data Model primitive types.

@Jens: Yep. And installed them. I just tried now again to check for Updates just to make sure and there weren't any. Note that I do not have an optical drive in my Dell XPS 15, I don't know if this affects but it should not cause the software to crash. I am getting an external Blu-ray writer these couple of days and I will see if the software crashes when I have it plugged in. I also deleted the Nero and Nero_AG folders from App Data, same issue.

    • It did not play in Nero but did not give me an error message as well. Weird. It just sat there no matter how many times I pressed play. However it played fine with Cyberlink PowerDVD 14 Ultra. I guess I will be using PowerDVD for all my play back and Nero for my encoding to mp4 etc... and burning disks lol. That is what I mostly use Nero for and no issues there.

  • Gabriel-

What is your operating system? Are all updates installed? I ask because in Vista and later, .net framework was updated to v4.5 by a Microsoft update.

You could try going to Control Panel\Programs and Features and finding the .net framework 4 client. Click on it as if to uninstall it. Select the Repair option. After complete, reboot.

  • Wither 1,

First, Gabriel has already mentioned to Jens that he has installed all updates.

Second, I'm not sure why you are making the statements about the framework. What is the point? For what it's worth, here's a reference to the fact that version 4.5 both replaces version 4.0 and updates it! Click here to see ".NET Framework 4.5 is an in-place update that replaces .NET Framework 4 (rather than a side-by-side installation). Our goal is for .NET 4.5 to be fully backward compatible with applications built for .NET 4 (.NET 3.5 and .NET 4.5 will be side-by-side). We’ll talk about the compatibility story for .NET 3.5 in a later post. One of the first things you’ll notice about .NET 4.5 is the version number (4.0.30319) is the same as .NET 4; this is the practice used by other in-place updates."

Third, what has the framework got to do with this topic? As has been stated so many times before: "A runtime error does not imply an error in the runtime."
I really would appreciate an explanation for this time-wasting request if you have the time.

It really would help if a Nero employee who is familiar with the MediaHome code would comment on these repeated posts and put an end to this "try this, try that" approach that just frustrates the user and obfuscates the issue at hand.
    • The problem is: There is no general solution. If there would be a single error in nero mediahome, we would have already fixed it.

So, each case, that is not related to a "simple" .net problem of defect databases must be analyzed in detail based on the crashdumps.
So, we first need to check the simple solutions - if this does not help, this must be sent to the technical support
    • Jens,

Gabriel stated in his very first post that, "Telling Windows to debug the crash in Visual Studio gives this: Unable to cast the type 'System.Int32' to type 'Nero.Framework.MediaLibrary.FaceGroupSortingMode'. LINQ to Entities only supports casting Entity Data Model primitive types."

That was followed by a quote from the Windows Application log,
      "Application: MediaHome.exe
      Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
      "

This last quotation mentioning the framework had the altogether predictable result of Wither 1 questioning the integrity and/or version of the framework unnecessarily. As a Nero programmer, I would suspect that you recognize this as an instance of what hg-dude used to call "a nonsense"! The question that I have in these instances is, "Why don't you or one of the other Nero "experts" nip this in the bud by simply stating that there is an error that must be addressed by a software developer, not a 'Googler'."

Furthermore, your suggestion below that this, and I suppose other issues, should only be directed to Tech Support after all other "tricks" have been exhausted simply encourages the continued guessing game that is evident each and every day here. I don't see where that helps anyone - not Nero, and certainly not the poster.

As for the "each case" verbiage, I need only mention that the recent update declared that this issue had been addressed. If that's not true, wouldn't simply admitting it be the most productive first step to getting it fixed?

  • Hehe thanks for trying to help Wither and Omega I know there is frustration but no need to lash out on each other :-) I can guarantee you it is not an issue with the .NET Framework and it does not need repairing. I am a Software Dev who codes for .NET among other stuff and my framework is completely fine :-)

I also understand that you cannot account for all scenarios/configurations in your testing, so I am sure Nero is trying to figure out the crash and hopefully we will get a fix soon.

I ordered my external blu-ray and it should be arriving soon. I will post back here if anything changes when I plug it in. You never know.
    • Gabriel,

Just to be clear, this is a public forum - Nero employees occasionally offer input, but I am not one of them and neither is Wither 1. That's why I mentioned just above that Jens, a Nero programmer, could "attract someone's attention." If he does, then something might possibly be done. You could also write to techsupport@nero.com and refer them to this thread. They take their time about responding and generally the first response is a "form letter" asking for more information. See my "idea" here for typical requests.

The problem with MediaHome starting up has been around for a very long time. It was supposedly fixed in an update on April 9th. After that update, I saw posts proclaiming the problem fixed, one post that said it didn't fix the problem, and another post that claimed the update introduced the problem on their system. Unfortunately, I can't find those latter posts. They may have been deleted. But, now you are experiencing the problem with a fully up-to-date system? Just to be certain, the product version on the Details tab of the MediaHome.exe properties sheet is 1.22.26.100 on my system. Yours? (Mine is located here: D:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\KM)

I agree that Nero "cannot account for all scenarios/configurations in your testing, ..." However, as I see it, they could go a lot further by simply acknowledging that the issues raised in this forum are software errors that require changes, putting an end to the never-ending obfuscation that sometimes occurs. I hope you get some response. And, I'll simply add that MediaHome should start up without any disc drives installed. If installing a Blu-ray device fixes your start-up difficulties, that would also be a problem, IMHO.

Thanks again for doing the player test in the other thread.

  • So I got it sorted out but it is a very specific problem in my case. Support like here came back to me telling me to repair my .NET Framework, so I investigated more my system because I know nothing was wrong with my .NET Framework, and the issue is not an issue with the .NET Framework per se but a long time back I was working on a project that had the entity framework june 2011 CTP installed (old and not used anymore) and this is what was causing a conflict in media home and made it crash. I have uninstalled it and all went well. This is a little technical but normal users should not have that issue as they would never have this Entity Framework version on there system.

  • Hi Gabriel,

    Thanks for the feedback!
    For general information:
As Jens wrote, in most cases, the problem with Nero MediaHome crashing on startup can have different causes. When a new update is realeased, the specific problems reported by customers that contacted TechSupport with NeroSupport.cab and Dump Files are generally fixed. For customers that have this kind of problem, but haven ́t contacted us directly with the mentioned files, unfortunately we cannot guarantee a fix. So if the problem still persists, after having installed the latest updates, please contact TechSupport directly, so we can analyze the particular case independently.

  • I’m confused
I purchased the Nero 2014 download version about 4 months ago. I am 75 years old and hoped that I might learn how to master this technology, as have many home videos that need a professional touch. I have been doing quite well and trying hard. Recently, MediaHome stopped working just like Richards problem.
I have tried to follow all the advice given, but most of it is beyond me. Most of the posts are 11-12 months old . Has the problem been solved now? Do I need to update . Hope you can help.
    Ted.

  • Hi Edward-

If you've run the check for updates from the Nero ControlCenter and there are none, then send an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com. Please let us know what they have to say.
