Nero recode 12 shows black screen when trimming end of video

I am running Windows 8.1 and the latest updates for Nero 12 and I'm having problems converting some WTV files into mp4 (for PSP format). Particularly I have some videos where if I trim from the back of the video, all I see is black screen instead of the video. If I convert the video without trimming, the conversion fails saying the Nero process has stopped responding. I'm running behind on "Walking Dead" episodes because the last 3 had this problem. Some of my other videos will convert just fine.

Any suggestions? I'm aware WTV files aren't officially supported.

  • I assume the videos aren't copy protected.

I recommend importing your file into Nero Video (Make Movie or slide show) and trimming it there. Then export the file to mp4. In the configuration, select PSP.

  • I think I found a better alternative program for WTV files from another forum post (http://forum.nero.com/nero_eng/topics...) called MCEBuddy. It does an excellent job of converting WTV files into PSP format and cutting out the commercials. It's much slower than Nero though.

  • So Nero Video does the same thing and is faster. I'm not sure why the other program is better.

Unfortuantely Nero Video cannot work correctly with WTV files as it produces async videos from WTV files.

here's a reply I received from Nero Tech Support. Although they say WTV is not supported in Nero Recode 12 (I have the latest version with updates applied), I confirm that WTV files are indeed supported in Nero Recode 12. But WTV will not be support in Nero Recode 2014.

      =================================

      "thank you for your e-mail.

The latest version of Nero Recode 12 does also not support WTV files. (available via onlineupdate)

Currently it is not planned to re-enable WTV usage at Nero Recode 2014.

But the WTV files can be processed within Nero Video.

In the most cases WTV files using Nero Video will lead to audio/video async.
If the source videofile was already async before it cannot be "repaired".

If the source WTV file does not contain async, we recommend to rightclick the WTV file at your Windows Explorer and use the Windows function to convert it to a dvr-ms file.

The dvr-ms file usage at Nero Video will make better results than the WTV.

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

      Best Regards"

    Adam:

Have you tried converting your WTV files to DVR-MS format. Recode works with those. Right-click on the WTV file in Windows Explorer and choose "Convert to .dvr-ms format". If the selection is not there, instructions here.

I would like to avoid creating duplicate work of converting WTV to DVR-MS then to MP4. Also I'm sure that converting to DVR-MS creates a similar sized file which doubles the amount of hard drive space used.

I don't think I'll use Nero Video either because I've had a few videos converted with Nero Recode that had audio/video sync issues too. I wasn't sure if it was my cable provider or Nero causing that issue.

I also find it ironic that Nero 12 supports DVR-MS because I couldn't upgrade from Nero 7 earlier because newer editions didn't support DVR-MS. Now that they are compatible with Windows 8, they finally added support for files created in Windows XP MCE (DVR-MS) but refuse to do support for Windows 8 MCE (WTV). I don't know who's making the decisions but they really need to think about what file types they support. Why are they suddenly adding support for an OS that's just about ended it's extended support cycle?

    Adam:

I just converted a ~15 minute .WTV (~1.5 GB) to .dvr-ms. It took about 1 minute and is about the same size as the original. Recoding to MP4 is taking about 7 minutes in both Recode 12 and Recode 2014.

Is it really necessary to save the .WTV after conversion to DVR-MS?

  • As long as I don't want to watch the show on my computer, I guess not...
I don't think DVR-MS files are compatible with Windows 8 MCE.

I could give it a shot...

  • Adam:

Alternatively, I guess the WTV could be saved and the DVR-MS discarded?

It is kind of a pain in any case!

  • Why the reluctance to use Nero Video? It does what Recode won't and there are no extra steps. The final video is PSP. Shouldn't be any video/sync issues.

  • I looked at Nero Video but couldn't figure it out. It looks like it only makes movies, DVDs, and DVD-type files. Can you explain where to start?

I did find out that DVR-MS files are supported in Windows 8 MCE so I can delete one if I wanted to. I still have to try using Nero Recode on DVR-MS files.

Nero Recode 12 is really buggy with WTV files. With the default settings, after the file is converted and copied to the PSP, I get errors when I try to use the PSP's search features (ability to go to any part of the movie in 30 second, 1 minute, 2 minute, 5 minute intervals). So I've worked around that issue by setting the resolution manually. Unfortunately that lowers the quality of the movie.

So far after using MCEBuddy, it's been fantastic. Here are some advantages I've noticed over Nero 12:
    • Cuts out commercials

    • Full screen resolution automatically which increases quality of video

    • In Media Go, the description of the movie is copied from the show/movie found in MCE

    • The name of the file was changed to show the Season number, episode number and title of the episode (for example, one title was The Walking Dead-S04E05-Internment). Nero just takes the name of the original file.

    • In Media Go, I can also see the logo of the show. Nero takes a random screenshot from the video.

    • There were only a few bugs I noticed about MCEBuddy or Media Go like not picking up the full title of the video in Media Go but that's minor for me. MCEBuddy also tried to give a season number, episode number and date for WWE Monday Night Raw and failed miserably (showed as S01E01 on December 30, 2013 when the show was aired November 18, 2013).

So unless I can find a fix or workaround for Nero, I might just stick with MCEBuddy.

  • If all you want to do is convert the file, open Nero Video and select Import File. Drag it to video track 1. Click on Export, Export Video to File. Select .mp4. In the Configuration, change mp4 to PSP. Export. You could do the same thing in probably all the other selections.

Nero has an ad detection feature which you can use to remove advertisements.

I don't understand some of the other things. For instance, is the logo of the show within the video?
    • I'm a little confused with Nero Video. To make sure the image fills the screen on the PSP, am I supposed to drag the borders of the video so that no black shows? What if I leave it as is?

The Ad Spotter has a sensitivity level? I am not sure what that means Low, High, Medium (as default)? What does it mean? MCE Buddy does it automatically and while it's not perfect I find it cuts 98% of commercials.

I also don't like how I have to name the file. Why can't it work like previous versions and take the existing name but change the extension?

  • Thanks, I'll give that a try later.

The logo of the show is taken from MCE. When you browse for shows/movies using MCE, you get a lot of information including the movie poster/logo of the show, the title, a description of the show, cast and more. I believe when the WTV file is recorded, all this information is saved within the file.

I added it here just for continuity in the discussion.

I don't have a PSP. I would think that it would have the capability of zooming so that the black borders don't show. You could use the Crop effect or you could scale the video to fill the screen in Advanced Editing. The black bars are added automatically when a video of lower resolution is being changed to a higher resolution to eliminate possible bad things in the final video such as pixelation.

None of the contols in any program are probably able to accurately determine what is an ad. Obviously, the higher the sensitivity in Ad Spotter, the harder it's going to look. The default is usually pretty good. However, I would never recommend telling it to automatically remove the ads because of the accuracy issue. You might end up losing some wanted video.

When you're exporting a file, you have the option of selecting where the file is supposed to go. You can browse to the folder you want to use and specify the name. I don't know why it changes the name except, possibly, to prevent the original file from being modified. It's been that way all the way back to v8 (the earliest copy I have).
