Nero Recode Adjust MP4 FileSize Question

I have Nero Recode 2014 (ver 15). I notice that when I recode a DVD and select different profiles in step 1 (for which device) and I select either ipad or ipad mini or playstation the file size is different even when I set the same "Average Bit Rate" I've clicked Edit Settings to try and find out what is changing the estimated filesize for the mp4 file it will create. In fact, when I select Playstation 4 the estimated filesize is HALF the ipad filesize. It seems the Playstation 4 is about the same filesize as my old version of Nero Recode which was Nero Recode 2. Nero Recode 2 would also automatically adjust the resolution lower (from 720x480, etc) lower if I set the bit rate lower to have a smaller filesize but I don't think that exists at all in Nero 2014. I can't seem to understand where the settings are for the profiles for ipad and playstation that change the mp4 filesize. It's driving me nuts. Thanks,

  • Different devices use different resolutions, bit rates, etc. Recode encodes the original according to the selections you make. Do you have the selections similar to what I show in the attached (due to the late hour, I didn't do a lot of investigation).

  • Yes but at the upper right of your screenshot there is a More Settings and when I click that I can change and see the bit rate by dragging the Recommended Setting to the left (that you circled above). I can see the bit rate and the resolution and for the same bit rate and resolution it still shows a different filesize and that size is around twice the size of the Nero Recode 2 program. Also, when I tried the Playstation 4 setting and it estimated it at around 750 mb it wound up being about twice the size at 1.5 gb or around the same as what it would be for the ipad setting. The reason I don't continue to just use Recode 2 is because the mp4 is not compatible with the ipad. But, if I code it in Recode 2 and then take that mp4 and recode it again in Recode 2014 then it works on the ipad and is around the same size as Nero Recode 2. There's got to be a way to do everything in Nero 2014 but the file size is so much larger and I still don't understand why. Also, when I drag the Quality setting it does not appear to change the resolution from 720x304 or whatever (on the right when you cilck more options you can see the output settings and what they are supposed to be).

  • Changing the quality isn't going to change the resolution. It's just going to use the available bits, as necessary, to accomodate the settings you specify. The appearance of your recoded video may improve or get worse. That will affect the size of the file.

If the resolution or aspect ratio, has to be changed to suit the device, that will also change the size of the file.

Mister_M is our most expert volunteer here in the forum in regards to video and he could explain it a lot better than I can. For instance, he could talk to you about when to use bilinear, bicubic, etc. in the Video settings for the resizing method. I can't.

If he doesn't see this, you could send an e-mail to tech support.

  • Although the video bit rate is the most important factor when it comes to file size, there are many other settings that can influence it, like wither said.

Normally only the change of the resolution doesn't matter because video bit rate is based on time dependency. If you only lower the resolution and the bit rate stays the same, the only advantage will be a better picture due to the higher bit rate per pixel.

Settings like the resizing method can influence the encoding matrix (which is responsible for the encoding efficiency) and therefore also the file size.

I don't know if the profiles of the different Recode versions use different matrixes so that the file size will differ.

That was also a topic a long time ago, when Nero 8 was introduced. The encoding efficiency was worse than in Nero 7. That was corrected later by updates.

So you'll have to ask tech support, what has been changed that the encoding efficiency got worse.

  • Oh, I've overseen the usage of the resizing method.

I wouldn't use bilinear (although it's the fastest resizing method) because it's rather outdated and not really efficient.

Lanczos should be used, when the resolution stays the same or is increased for fast moving videos (action movies etc.).

Super resolution is also very efficient when it comes to upscaling the picture of videos with only a few or slow motions (like documentaries etc.). It's not suitable for action movies.

If you want to downscale the picture (decrease the resolution), you should use bicubic because of its used resizing algorithm.

  • All I want to do is have the same quality and file size as in nero recode 2 but the file size is twice as large and I don't know why or what to do. Also, I still do not see where it is getting the estimated file size from in my original post and the playstation choice is double the estimated size it displays. I'm wondering if anyone can help.
