New verbatim BD burner BD Burning successful but not readable on BD drive of phillips BD-player

Hy Wither
Maybe you have read my reply to the last burning problem for DL DVDs-
My idea was to buy a new drive now.
Now I have bought an external Verbatim BD burner.
After Installation it shows a pioneer drive not a Verbatim one
[16:11:33] ExpressUI Destination Device: PIONEER BD-RW BDR-UD03 (Capabilities: 002AC51F)
and it installed an additional Nero burnig program
Nero burn&archive
In the manual is one note that says for playing the BD has an additional playing software to be installed.
But on the computer the BD can be played without problems on Power DVD16.
Several times before I could play burned DL DVDs without problem on my BL player but not on my computer. That did not concern me but now I can play on the computer but not on the BD drive of my home cinema.
Do you have an idea? May be a newer BD code is not downward compatible?
The BD home cinema is about 7 years old. I checked already if for the unit is a new software available but there is no available at Phillips.
merry Christmas and happy new year.

  • Are you referring to this drive?

Verbatim Store 'n' Go USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive

It's hard to say who actually built the drive but the Pioneer drive it's referring to is an internal SATA drive. Do you have a USB 3 connection on your system?

I have no idea what Nero Burn & Archive is. But, since it came with the drive, it's probably a free Essentials type and doesn't have BD playback capability.

  • Yes my new drive is with USB3.0 attached to my Computer.Maybe my English was not clear enough to understand. What I wanted to say was that my burning problem is now completely solved with the new drive. And I think the lazers will loose ability when ageing. Our first discussion a year ago I could solve with the use of verbaim discs instead of the former used ones. But one year later it appeared again. Thatswhy I bought the new drive and with that I don't have burning problems with DL DVDs.
So I started to check how it is with Bluray disks and that also worked fine. The project could be burned successfully. And the BD could be played on the computer, but not on my 7 years old Philips soundbar. By the way I checked the function on my neighbours BD soundbar and the DVD can be played.
The problem this time was not with Nero.
I thought may be you as a specialist for DVD burning have heard that there are known problems with the downward compatibility of newer video codecs.
In a Philips comunity I read that some of the Phiilips soundbars have a problem with playing James Bond skyfall BDs and one of the anwers from 2013 said. There is no solution because Philips will not update the software.
My next step after Christmas Holidays will be to contact Philips support.
If you are interested in the result I will send it in this topic if thee is one.

  • I'm no expert or even a specialist. I'm just a volunteer who's been in here trying to help for over 8 years. What I know, I've learned by the seat of my pants, help files, and contributions from others.

One of the problems with blu-ray is that there are AACS encryption keys for controlling copy protection and they change. Some devices may have their key revoked which results in the ability to play older discs but not the newer ones. This whole mess started back in 2007. I believe Nero said in another thread that this is one reason they decided to discontinue the Nero Blu-ray Player.

  • I know and really admire your acting for help for free. Excuse my English. Sometimes I don't know the exact words. What I meant was that I really learnt a lot during our conversation.
I understand your point with the copy protection and sometimes I don't understand questions when people ask why they could not copy a bought DVD.
The videos on my blueray disk I had recorded from TV. I don't think that it is possible to send films on TV with copy protection information. Maybe that there will be a possiblity in the future.
From the Philips comunity I did not receive answers yet. and the product supprt will be available after new year.
I think that if a newer BD player can play the disk, shows that it cannot have to do something with copy protection.
What I don't really understand is that the BD drive from my laptop which is the same age like my BD player can play the disk without problems. That would say that my ides with the missing downgrade compability is also wrong.

  • Back then, the AACS was revoking the keys for certain manufacturers, who were ameanable to it. So, it just depends on who manufactured the drive.

The other issue I can think of is that the way reflectivity is made on blu-ray discs was changed maybe 4 or 5 years ago. Originally, it was called high to low but then the discs were changed to low to high. I know that affects burning, unless a firmware update is issued that corrects this for a drive issued before the change. I don't know if it affects playback.

  • Thank you Wihter
I understand the point and I already received an answer from Philips. The software on my equipment is the last issue dated 2013 and they will not deliver a new one. The equipment is out of service.I think I have to live with it, that my equipment does not play self burned BDs.
As a summary of all our dialogs about my DL burning problems is and I think you can use that for futural questions to this topic.
If a burner comes to an age or maybe also to a higher number of burnings the ability to hold the track will become worse. That was the first faiurel I had.
After burning a summary of DLs it started to make trouble and the change to another brand of discs may help for a time or also a number of burnings. What is more important I cannot say. My installed burner still burns one layer DVDs without failures. But the change to a new burner cleared all my trouble with DLs.
    Happy new year

  • Since you have v2016, you could always run this past tech support.

Hey, the new year is just a little over a day away. I can't believe it.

    Happy New Year to you.
