No Blu-ray menus/templates

The product, Nero Classic 2017, is not fully funtional.
I am using it mainly to author Blu-ray discs.
I import a supported (AVCHD) file and then, where there are supposed to be
menu choices and various templates, nothing is there.
The program crashes when I click the drop down arrow to find
“menus to use. “ The menu and extra content pack have been installed,
yet there are no menus/templates to be had.
When I tried a DVD project, the menus etc. did appear.
But why nothing for Blu-ray? The product is supposed to do that.

  • If it is crashing when you click on "Menus to use", there's something wrong with your installation.

If you open the Nero ControlCenter, is your purchased serial number shown correctly- 39 characters including hyphens and only Zeroes (no "O"s).

Is there any similar serial number there, such as a trial version serial number?

  • My purchased serial number is shown correctly in the Control Center.
I have Nero 12 still installed, and that serial number is also correctly shown.
I have no trial version or own any other Nero product.
I wonder why this problem would happen only when authoring Blu-ray (not DVD)?

  • Mark,

    From Amazon:

Classic: Create amazing DVDs with numerous menus for your home cinema.

Platinum: Create amazing DVDs and Blu-ray Discs with dozens of professional menus.
    • As far as I know, the standard versions would burn blu-rays but the number of menu templates is pitiful. I think it's like 1 blu-ray template but not sure. Of course, those versions didn't get the blu-ray player when it was available.

In looking at the Classic description at nero.com, products, Nero 2017 Classic, it says-

"Whether it’s on CD, DVD, or Blu-ray DiscTM, you can copy and burn your precious data with the reliable industry leading burning specialist thanks to Nero 2017 Classic*."

The asterisk refers to copy protection.

  • My recommendation would be to uninstall it. Do a fresh download from nero.com, downloads and install it.

Of course, he can always ask technical support about it- Nero.com, support, contact, technical support.

  • I am not sure how or where on nero.com you can go "download" a product you already own.
I did uninstall my full disc version, then installed theTRIAL version; but still have the
same problem: No Blue-ray menu options, and the program crashes when I try
    to look for them.
I have contacted Nero tech support. No answer thus far...

Given that there is arguably at best only 50% truth in all advertising, has anyone
been able to say for sure if Nero Classic 2017 can actually author Blu-ray discs?
Any user out there been able to accomplish that??
If the box says one thing, and the product does (or doesn't do) another, then that's
the real reason why I am having such trouble.

  • I'm confident in what I said earlier about the capabilities of Classic. I've been in here everyday for over 8 years and and have 9 versions of Nero. My copy of v10 on this computer is the standard version and I can burn blu-ray discs with it.

The advertising prepared by the marketing people at Nero is, in my opinion and that of others who are very familiar with the Nero products, not always made perfectly clear for those who are not familar with things like video editing and burning. Sometimes, our complaints to Nero about it get some changes made but often, they fall on deaf ears. Competition is tough.

  • Either Nero Classic 2017 can author Blu-ray discs or it cannot.
The advertising should be clear about that.
(Was it actually phased out with the 2017 edition?)

  • I cited the website. I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with you about it. If what the website says is incorrect, then I'll address it directly to Nero management.

Note that Nero doesn't work on the weekends. You won't get a reply until at least Monday.

  • My Nero Classic 2017 can burn Blu-ray discs using Nero Video to author them.

My 'Menus to use' button gives a drop down list:

    Title and chapter menus
    Title menus only
    Do not create a menu

5 Standard2D menus appear in the window below.

  • To cite what the website says about 2017 Classic is not really helpful: I already read that before purchasing. Ditto for knowing the capabilities of some older version like v10.
At last, a user of the exact same product who can report his own findings. Evidently, this Classic can indeed author Blu-ray.Thanks, Eric. As I said, in my case, use of the drop-down arrow to find "menus to use" causes a crash. I now await word from Nero tech support...
    • Hi Mark,
A bit of a "long shot" ... but perhaps giving the following is worth a try :

It might be a case of the "cache" folders becoming corrupt. You can delete the Nero Video "Cache" folders, and they will be re-initiated when Nero Video starts up again.

      Where to do the deleting:

Substitute your windows username for "YOUR USER NAME" below ...

      For Nero 2017 :

      (1)
Delete the folder "Nero Vision" at
      C:\users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Local\Nero\Nero 2017

      (2)
      Delete the folder "SharedMediaData" at
      C:\users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Local\Nero

      (3)
Delete the folder "Nero Vision" at
      C:\users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Nero\Nero 2017

Note: The above folders are usually "hidden" folders in Windows, so you might have to use the "View" Tab in Windows File Explorer to show hidden files from C:\users\YOUR USER NAME
      and below.

  • It was a long holiday weekend. Nero fiddled while no discs were burned. Now they have responded. I am not yet sure I want to do all of what they are asking. I recall going down this road once before with them; with the end result being unsatisfactory.
    Here is Nero's reply:

Please provide more information regarding this issue.
    Please record video using PSR.
Here is guide how to use PSR.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGJ6g...
Please send PSR file and screenshot from error message to us.

Can you also provide us with Nero support files from your computer for further study into what might be causing

this problem? Here is how you retrieve the Nero support files:

Download the file "GetSupportFiles.zip" from the link below, save this file to your desktop. Extract the zipped

file on your hard drive using WinZip or WinRAR. Start the tool by double-clicking on the EXE-file. The window

“C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe“ will open. The execution of the tool may take some minutes.

    http://www.nero.com/eng/support/servi...

You can track the single steps in the displayed window. After the tool has run successfully, you will find a

file called "NeroSupport.cab" on your desktop. Please send us this file as an email attachment if you contact

    technical support.

Additionally, we would like to point out some unique properties of the application "GetSupportFiles":

The application gathers the following information:
•All available log files for different Nero applications, containing information about the last processes being

performed during your Nero installation. These log files may indicate what kind of files you use within Nero.
•System information gathered by the Microsoft Windows Tool "MSInfo32"
•Information on the installed DirectX version: For this, the Microsoft Windows application "DXDiag" will be

    used.
•The "SETUPAPI.LOG" log file: This file will list all installed devices, Windows Service Packs and Windows

    Hotfixes.
•The "TWAIN.LOG" log file: This file will list the installed devices recognized via TWAIN.
•The "SchedLgU.txt" log file. This file contains information on currently scheduled tasks (e.g. the JobScheduler

    in Nero BackItUp)
•Certain extracts from the registry: ?Information on the settings with which Nero applications run.
•Information on how the CD/DVD drives have been installed.
•Information about other installed applications and drivers for other applications on your system as well as a

    list of your sent files.

Nero suggests that you check the file created by "GetSupportFiles" and remove private information that you don’t

    want to transfer to Nero.

    Best regards
    Tanel

  • I don't see anything unreasonable in their instructions.

In the past, they've asked people to use something called Enable Logging or the Dependency Walker. PSR seems to be the same type of software.

The request for the nerosupport.cab file is normal. It's the first time I've ever seen them ask to check the file for anything personal. Normally, the only thing that might be in there is serial numbers. That's why we never request that anyone post one in the forum.

If you want your problem resolved, I don't see an alternative.

  • I wonder if having Nero12 installed as well is causing conflict. I believe it saves your custom templates to the same place namely C;\Users\Name\Documents\NeroVideo\Templates\...

Only a long shot but try moving or temporally deleting the folder to see if it makes any difference.

  • I never used any "custom templates"--I checked and that folder is empty. I then completely uninstalled Nero 12, and Classic 2017 finally gave up the missing menu options. There must have been some other conflict there between 2017 and 12,
not just with the template folder.
However, why can't 2017 burn directly to (Blu-ray) disc? Image recorder or hard disk
folders are the only burn options. This adds an extra step, as one must go to Express or Burning ROM to finish the job.
Nero 12 had "More" button where you could find: Configure/Recording format options/Erase disc/Disc Info/Erase disc/Finalize disc, etc.
In 2017 Classic, these are all missing, severely limiting control over the final output.
Even 2017 Platinum is missing these items.

  • Mark-

Since the option to select your Blu-ray drive is missing, there may be a problem with it.

What is the model number for your drive?

When you open Control Panel, Device Manager, DVD/CD-Rom drives, is your drive shown? Is there a yellow triangle next to it?

  • No, there is no problem with my Blu-ray/DVD/CD-Rom drive. It is shown in the Device Manager (no yellow triangle); and besides, it functions perfectly with other
video software, but not with Nero Classic 2017, where it doesn't even show up as an option. Image recorder or hard disk folders are the only burn-to choices.
But, taking the Image Recorder burn over to Nero Express or Burning ROM, my drive is now there. This adds a superfluous step to the workflow.

Meanwhile, where are the "Configure" and "Recording Format" options in 2017 Classic and Platinum? I still can't find them. These are important controls!

Since you had v12 previously installed, would you download and run this file-

    http://www.filedropper.com/firstaidkit_2

    After running it, reboot.

Then try Nero Video in regards to both the menu templates and the option to select the blu-ray drive.

  • On my Windows 7 HP laptop, I was (after much tinkering) able to install Nero Classic 2017 and get it to work perfectly. On my other laptop which is Windows 8,
Classic installs, but I still have the problem of the missing menu options, where after, the program crashes. That's where I stand right now.
"File dropper" identifies out-of-date and missing drivers sure, but it charges $29-$59 per year to fix anything. Instead, I went over to the HP site, scanned my system, then downloaded/installed everything recommended.
But the missing menu options problem persists.

  • I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to "File Dropper." It apparently isn't the same thing as filedropper.com. If you click on my link, you will simply get the option to download the file I uploaded. There's no charge. This file is from Nero tech support and it fixes problems with Nero entries in the registry. Nothing from HP or anywhere else will do that.

However, I didn't go back through this whole thread but you can only use a single serial number for a Nero product on one computer. The patents can't be activated on the second computer unless you uninstall it from the first computer. As a result, you won't be able to use mpeg-4, .mts (blu-ray) and .m2ts files on the second computer. This could be the cause of your problems.

  • I have no idea what was up with that "file dropper" link; but if you cannot have this
software installed at once on two different computers, then I will not worry about
trying to fix what in any case Nero will not permit. Odd, that when attempting
installation on a second machine, there is no warning about this restriction UPFRONT.
Thanks, I think we are done here.
