Not enough system resources are available to perform this action

I downloaded the trial version of Nero 2014. I was loving everything about it! Then on day 6 of my trial when I was convinced I was going to purchase it, I get a pop up opening my project with Not enough resources available... reduce the complexity of your project..., its got roughly 200 pics with 4 songs. It worked fine yesterday, but today with no changes, it doesn't. the only changes to my laptop was my company upgrade my MS office from 2003 to 2007. Can anyone tell me why this is happening, I would like to purchase the full license, but won't do it until I know this has a resolution.

    2.
Extract the zipped file on your hard drive
    3.
Start the tool by double-clicking the EXE-file.
    4.
After the tool has successfully run you will find a file named "NeroSupport.cab" on your desktop.

Please send this file as an e-mail attachment to techsupport@nero.com.

  • In general, 3-5 business days. Also, periodically look at your e-mail spam folder since, occassionally, tech support responses erroneously get put there.

What is your operating system? How much free space do you have on the hard drive (or do you have a SSD?). If you have Vista or later and a hard drive, it might help to periodically run the Windows Disk Cleanup utility and reboot. Make sure to checkmark temporary files and empty the recycle bin when it tells you how much it can clean up. You wouldn't use the utility on a SSD.

  • Have you had a satisfactory response to this problem?
I now also have the same problem although my system hasn't changed for some time. One minute it seems to work okay then the next minute it throws this error. I HAVE to then reboot the application and can usually run for a bit longer before it strikes again.
I have even gone to Windows Live Media and built a MUCH larger session with that and loaded it in to Nero and it has worked fine so the fact that I am working on a TINY faction of a project means it has to be a Nero problem.
I am doing the GetSupport thing so will see if they throw any light on the problem.

  • No, not yet. They don't seem to understand the problem. They continue to think it's when I am burning a disc while I continue to correct them and tell them it's when I open the application with my existing slideshow. The last comment they made was because it was the trial version, but how can I be sure It won't have the same problem when I buy it. I love the features, but not going to spend the money if i can't resolve the issue. All I want to do is make one dvd sideshow a year for my softball team.

  • If you haven't tried it then have a look at Windows Movie Maker (which is free). It worked fine for me until I came to actually burn a DVD then it refused to accept my drive.
That is when I moved over to Nero. I thought that buying the software would give me better support and less problems - ha.
Nero appears to import Movie maker files quite well so you can start building it now with that and if they ever resolve the issues then you can jump in to Nero and not loose all your work.
I think the issue is to with the fact that Nero needs memory to handle all the effects, transitions and other stuff and just blows a gasket when it gets too big. However big for Nero appears to be quite small and a fraction of what Movie Maker can handle. The error also says reduce content (pictures, videos, transitions, effects...) but this never works unless you are prepared to make big sacrifices in a single session. i have had to split the last 2 sessions I made in to 2 separate parts just to get past this error but I don't want to that this time and now it throws an error as soon as i look at my current session.......
VERY frustrating! Given time constraints I will seriously have to consider going to Movie Maker, built it there and then hope I can import and burn with Nero without it throwing a wobbly

  • Adam- there's certainly something wrong if they haven't resolved your issue in 3 months. I see you mentioned that the last response from them is you're using the trial version. Burning in the trial version is limited to 100 MB and the longest video project can only be 30 minutes. If you're exceeding any of those limits, there's nothing they can do. The message you're getting may be caused by that.

In some cases, that kind of message may be caused by RAM going bad. However, encoding creates tons of temporary files and fragmentation on a hard drive which may cause this. That's why I asked you to try this.

widgetoz- I don't know how large your projects are. When working with large projects in HD, the system requirements indicate that it can require 50 GB or more of free disc space. Even if you have the space, you may need to periodically do the clean up I mentioned. You have the option to contact tech support about your issue.

  • I am not burning because I was just testing it out to see if it is the product I want to buy. The slideshow was not more than 20 minutes because that would be the limit of the DVD I would want to give my team. My drive is only 4% fragmented, but I am running a defrag as we speak just to rule that out.

  • Okay. I have Windows set to automatically defrag my hard drive once a week. Did you do the clean up before the defrag? That's the optimal way since there's no point of defragging temporary files. If you didn't, run it anyway.

  • My last project that had this issue has a 1MB nvc file and 734MB of content.
The one before that which works has a 6MB nvc file and 1.1GB of content
The current one which doesn't even load now without the error has a 9MB nvc file and 640MB of content. It has no movies and uses one of the built in themes for the soundtrack and any effects.
As I mentioned in my first reply, I am contacting support and did so immediately after I posted that first reply.
I have stripped my system bare of applications and killed any running applications and services not required and that has made no difference. My system regularly defrags when it goes over 10% and I regularly cleanup so do not believe those to be issues.
You say HD which I assume you mean High Definition but doesn't that apply to the compilation at the end when it is being exported. I can't even open the current project without the error and the previous one works until you make a change (move a picture or change the text in a caption) and then it throws the error.

Groan, it just gets worse!!! Just started a new project, nvc file is 1.8MB, content is 9M. No music, no videos and only one effect used on all pictures and it crashes as soon as it opens the project - this is turning in to rubbish. The same exact stuff is open in Movie Maker and runs and I can add music and a heap more effects - woe is me!

  • Adam, widgetoz, et. al.,

    Just a thought!

I seem to remember that this resource problem is more of a Nero internal data structure issue than a "system" issue. In other words, TBs of free disc space, etc. wouldn't matter. I've zipped up some images for test purposes. The are 3 separate .zip files, Tiny (12 MB download), Small (170 MB), and Large (1 GB download).

Each .zip contains a folder with 2500 pictures.

When I try to import all 2500 pictures into either Nero 12 Video or Nero 2014 Video, only 1959 are imported before I run out of resources no matter what size files I import, tiny, small, or large, and no matter what type of slideshow I choose, etc.

It also doesn't matter if I am running only Nero Video or Nero Video with Nero MediaHome, WaveEditor, SoundTrax, Recode, Express, BurningROM, etc.

So, although I understand that this will not help individual cases, I'd be interested in knowing if anyone gets similar results. The knowledge may help determine a path to proceed upon!

  • widgetoz,

In your post above, you said, "Groan, it just gets worse!!! Just started a new project, nvc file is 1.8MB, content is 9M. No music, no videos and only one effect used on all pictures and it crashes as soon as it opens the project - this is turning in to rubbish.

If you would give some specifics, I will try to replicate your problem. What Movie Options? What is the resolution of your pictures? How many pictures? What effects? Etc.

Alternatively, you may want to duplicate a project I just made after downloading the "Tiny" pictures in my last post and see if that gives you problems. For my project, I chose "Make a slideshow" and I used these Movie Options:

I attempted to import all 2500 tiny pictures (with a default duration of 4 seconds each), but ran out of resources on the 1958th one. It is possible to add one more, but I didn't.

I acknowledged the "insufficient resources" dialog and chose a theme:

After some time, the theme was applied:

I saved the project and re-opened it with no problem:

As you can see, the project file is quite large.

  • Okay, I tried this. I imported up to Tiny2117 then dragged them all in to the session. It failed after Tiny1633 but I continued as per your notes. Added the theme, played it, saved it and reloaded it.
I then tried an Express Movie with HDTV Basic HD with 50fps (the one I have used for all my projects so far). Imported up to Tiny2117 then dragged them all in to the session. This time it loaded up to Tiny 1958. I added the same theme but this time I got `Nero Video has experienced a serious problem... blah blah". I allowed it to save the project and rebooted Nero Video. It failed to start. Went to Nero main screen, selected Nero Video, which started, and then went to the saved movie. Not only did it not remember where the file was but the NVC file was empty. So I started again this time only importing up to Tiny1957. Loaded those in to the session and added the same theme. Played it and saved it.
So I reloaded one of my projects that has been failing. It loaded, I moved stuff around, played it. Moved so more stuff around then it came up with the same serious problem error! So I don't know.
SlideShow may use less resources than Movies but I do need to include some video footage so SlideShow hasn't been an option so far

  • widgetoz,

On my system, the resource problem occurs at 1958 regardless of the type of project, PAL or NTSC, 4:3, 16:9, HD this and that, or the size of the pictures. Or, whether I choose Advanced Movie, Express Movie, or Slidshow. So, I don't understand the differences you are seeing. Are you scrolling down?

Do your problem projects have a large amount of pictures?

  • Problem was not the importing in to the main `media folder' but dragging them in to the actual session. When the error comes up it is on the last file that got loaded in to the session and they had the filenames given above.

So far my projects have contained :-
    1) 185 files (~1.1GB)
    2) 108 Files (~734MB)
    3) 225 Files (~1.09GB)
    4) 176 Files (~738MB)
    5) 66 Files (~218MB)

So certainly NOT a large number of files although they are obviously larger than your `tiny files'. In these projects not all of the files are loaded (I have a project folder that holds all the files I am thinking of incorporating in to a session but some of them get left out because they are unwanted, so the actual quantity and size is slightly less than shown above).

Session (3) and 94) was meant to be one project but because of the resource error I had to split it in to 2 smaller ones.

I don't know where your Tech Support communications stand.

In order to establish a little common ground, I've uploaded a folder containing 400 copies of the Nero NTSC Flower Meadow sample video [~1.25 GB download]..

I am able to import all of them, add a theme, save the project, and then re-open it without an issue.

If you are willing, please try this. If it gives you problems, that will be a starting point.

You have been SUBSTANTIALLY more responsive and I appreciate that.
Tried your project and it worked. Added a theme, added some transition affects, added some text and it played!
Reloaded my latest troublesome project - 248 pictures in a size of 645MB. Started playing it, got through about 4 pictures and the the images stopped changing although the background music kept playing. Then it crashed with a `Nero Video has experienced a serious problem... blah blah" problem (been getting more of those lately).
So I don't understand what the problem is. really frustrating

The best I can suggest is to either send another e-mail or contact them through the chat line (which is on GMT). Since you speak English, you should be able to get to the chat here-

The audio is still there as are all the text frames and they are correctly positioned time wise - but no pictures or videos :(
I think it is time I took a LONG break from Nero Video before I lose what hair I have left.
Will be back when I have passed the lunacy tests and hopefully I can get the problem resolved. Thanks to all those who have responded above who at least showed me there was some light at the end of the tunnel ( pity was an express train coming the other way!!!!)

  • Supply them with a copy of my project and media files so that they can analyse them in their test-lab.
Should at least prove one way or the other if there is a problem with my files (I did find a problem in another project that had 2 TIF files. These showed up as being over 90MB each (!). When playing the project Nero Video would get to and go in to the TIF picture but then the clock would stop running and it would eventually crash. In the meantime background audio would keep playing.

  • I’m happy!
Yesterday I HAD this issue. Today I do not.

Not enough resources? Hmmm. Maybe if we free-up some resources, things may work OK?

Received the exact message posted above. Read all the way to the end of the internet! And this is what "fixed" the issue and now I'm having no problems at all.

I'm using WinXP 32-bit, by the way. This is VERY significant. WinXP 32-bit allocates up to 2GB of memory per process. PER PROCESS. Nero runs as a process. Of course it does.

But there is a switch you can set in your boot.ini file which will expand this limit to 3GB. It doesn't matter if your computer only has 2GB of physical memory, because this limit applies to virtual memory on disk as well. The switch will allow WinXP to allocate more memory to the process. The switch is "/3GB".

    START
    Run
    Open c:\boot.ini
    OK

    Notepad opens.

Now edit this (my file here - yours will likely be different):

    [boot loader]
    timeout=8
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    ... to this:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=8
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /3GB

... and save and close, then reboot.

Note that the line to be edited is the one which contains the name of your operating system, in this case "Microsoft Windows XP Professional". The line for me was the last line in the file, starting with "multi...". Here in the forum, this line wraps around due to its length.

    You're welcome!

ironically I haven't had this problem for some time now (saying that will probably mean the problem comes back) and I am not aware of anything that changed to (a) start the problem appearing or (b) make it go away.
