I’m frustrated

On Nero 11, when making a movie or burning a DVD the video files take forever to upload. Why?

When importing video files to the movie maker or to the DVD burner the files take forever. The "analysing files" upload goes fast to 90% and from then on is like pulling teeth... Can somebody explain this and suggest some kind of solution?
Thanks a lot.

  • In regards to burning, it requires lots of resources. Does your system meet all the requirements for v11 inregards to having a discrete graphics card and the minimum CPU and RAM?

One thing you should do is run the Windows Disk Cleanup utility periodically and reboot. Make sure that the temporary files and empty recycle bin are checkmarked. Also, make sure your hard drive is not fragmented and has plenty of free space. Another aid is to set the minimum and maximum virtual memory to 1.5 to 3 times the amount of RAM your system has (in Mb).

These things may also help with the import speed.

Thanks for your help. However I must confess I don ́t know much about the technology. Your kind suggestions sound like Chinese to me. I can only say that I do keep my PC clean with almost weekly disk cleanings and it shows about 80% free.
If you ́d be so kind as to explain about the minimum and maximum virtual memory and all that RAM stuff I will really appreciate it.

  • The Windows Disk Cleanup utility is found under Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools. When you run it, you specify the partition you want to clean. When it finishes finding the amount of disc space it can recover, it will show a list of things it can clean. By checking temporary files and empty recycle bin and running it, followed by a reboot, it will clean up a lot of space on the hard drive which makes seeking and access times faster. It doesn't work with a SSD.

Regardless of the amount of free disc space, a hard drive can become fragmented. That increases the seek and access times. If you have Vista or later, you can schedule Windows to defrag your hard drive (not a SSD). Of course, you want to schedule it for when the system is running.

When you do intensive operations, such as encoding video, the system uses a lot of memory (RAM) which is installed on your motherboard. When the allotted RAM is used up, sort of speak, Windows uses a part of the hard drive as RAM. That's referred to, in this case, as virtual memory. Virtual memory on most systems is set to allow Windows to control and use up to a certain amount of the hard drive space. That's fine but, depending on the condition of the hard drive space (fragmented or lots of temporary files), that can take the hard drive a lot of time to seek and access free space. Setting the minimum and maximum virtual memory as mentioned above, instead of letting Windows control it, reduces those times. Search on Virtual Memory in the Windows Help file. It will get you there.

This description is about the best I can do with the little knowledge I have. A computer specialist would run all over me.

I ́m really grateful to you for taking the time to help me out. Being a senior citizen sometimes overwhelmed by all this.
It ́s clearly understood about the disk clean up and defragmenting process. I do both on a regular basis. What remains a mistery for me is the part about RAM, virtual memory and setting the minimum / maximum.
I ́m working on Windows 7 Home Premium
I suspect the problem is with Nero 11 since I also have the Windows DVD Maker in in that program video files are uploaded instantly. No waiting. In Nero 11 it takes half and hour to upload a one hour long video file.

  • Open Nero Video. Open Make Advanced Movie. Click on Options then, Application Settings. In the Editing tab, checkmark the box to "enable Nero background rendering. Try an import. Does that help?

  • My mistake. :(

Open Nero Video, Make Movie or Slide Show. Click on More, then Configure. Select the Editing tab and make the change I mentioned above.

Really appreciate your help. I did as you suggested, rebooted and tried to import a video file avi 52 minutes long. It took Nero 38 minutes to upload. The same video uploads instantly on Windows DVD Maker. I think something is not right with Nero 11 or maybe it ́s not compatible with my PC?. They been sending emails trying to get me to upgrade to Nero 12. I don ́t think so. I ́ll just keep on using Windows DVD Maker. The only reason I was braving Nero is because I like the menu I can generate with them... but it ́s not that important eifther. Agains thanks a lot for trying to help...

When you installed v11, did you install from a disc or did you download the installation file?

  • I think you should uninstall v11 and go to nero.com, downloads, previous products and download/install the update. Of course, put your puchased serial number in during the installation and run the check for updates from the nero controlcenter afterwards.
