Problem using the remote with menu text buttons in Nero 14

I have a Blu-Ray project with several video clips on each menu page. I have a customized menu using text buttons linked to each video clip on the menu. Using the mouse in the Nero 14 program works perfectly; however when using the arrows on the keyboard, and when using a remote while playing on a Blu-Ray player, the buttons are not selected in order but in a seemingly random manner. Any way to fix this?

  • I don't have time to burn a project with buttons that are text only to check it out.

If you were using a number and text button, you could set the buttons to continue in sequence accross all menu pages. You would do that by selecting Customize, Disc/Project and uncheck the box to restart numbering on each page. You could then select Text only for display if you don't want to display the numbers.

Does that help? You could burn the project to your hard drive instead of a disc to try it out.

Wither 1, thanks for the prompt reply and trying to help me with this issue. I am using a number and text button, but choosing to only display the text. I originally did let the default selection occur to permit the restarting of numbering of buttons for each page. Now I don't see that option available. Do I need to start over or is there an easy way to find the box to uncheck the restart option? I tried clicking on everything and then checking /disc/Project, but that box does not appear. Thanks!

  • If you select Advanced Editing before unchecking that box, I don't think it's available. Try a small project in which you uncheck it first before using Advanced Editing.

There's nothing you can do about the existing disc since it's finalized, unless you're using a RE. You could import the vts....vob files from the existing disc. I believe there's an option to include menus during this process. You would just have to try it. Another possibility is to import the BD structure in Recode and recode to mpeg-4. I think the option to include menus is also there. I don't remember all this stuff, especially because I work with 6 different Nero versions and they're all different. I spend time in the forum that I should be using for other things.

Wither 1, I really appreciate your help. I am using RE, so at least I am not creating coasters. I have actually started this project from scratch from both Nero 12 and Nero 14, hoping to resolve the button issue. I 'll just start over again and uncheck the box and keep you posted. I'll be so excited if that works. Do you think that 12 or 14 would do better on this button issue, or does it matter? Have a great weekend.

  • It doesn't matter which version you use in regards to the button issue.

When you create your project, select Save, Save As to save your project, before burning it. That will create a .nvc file which has all your edits and that you can open when you start NV.

  • Well, Wither 1, bad news. I completely started from scratch in Nero 14 and unchecked the box. However, Nero still renumbered the buttons on each menu. And the buttons still skip around while using the remote.

The manual said something about a navigation tree that is found in the content section. When I click on an MPEG that I have in the content section, all I get is a link to chapter 1 that is not editable Any ideas?

  • The numbering should start on the first menu and continuously increment by 1 until you get to the last button on the last menu.

Did you link each button to a specific video or chapter? If you're using a titles and chapters menu, you will need to add the chapters. If I remember correctly, you can add chapter markers in the menu screen. You can always add them in the Content screen.

When you create multiple menus, Nero will automatically add generic navigation buttons. You can replace them with other buttons.

  • PegasusRx,

After a quick review of your postings:

The navigation tree is on the Content tab of the Menu Edit screen. It is only available in the Advanced Edit mode on the Menu Edit screen.

I am unable to burn a Blue-ray disc, but I can burn an AVCHD-DVD or a normal DVD. In both cases, I have had no problems. If you have any R/W DVDs, would it be possible for you to try an AVCHD-DVD?

Am I correct in assuming that your difficulties are present using the default menu settings?

What menu template are you using?
    • PegasusRx,

I use a group of ~18 second long videos for little experiments. There are 10 of them made from the Nero Flower Meadow sample video. I zipped them up and uploaded them to the cloud. Using them for testing/learning saves me time since they are so short. The different colors make it easy to track things. If you need something like that:

zipped up MP4 Colored Flower Meadow Videos [~27 MB].
    • PegasusRx,

One more little note. The behavior of the menu is unrelated to the selection of text type. The button numbers are related. If you have a menu with 8 titles, 4 per page, with numbering starting over on each page, pressing one of the digits 1-4 and then OK on your remote will work on each page. If numbering is continued, the digits 1-4 will only work on the first page of four videos; the second page responds to 5-8, etc.

  • Thanks everyone fro trying to help. I am using customized menus. I am linking MPEG videos in content to a button text type button using text only (exactly as you have above, Omega Tester) on each menu page. Wither 1, you may have a point about Chapters. I have not (knowingly) created any chapters, but have merely attempted to link buttons to MPEG video on each menu.

  • Pegasus,

When you say that you are using "customized" menus, do you mean that you are simply adjusting the parameters on the "Customize" tab, or do you mean that you are in the Advanced Edit mode?

  • The only time that I can access the Make Chapter button is early in the project on the content screen. Then, the only option is to automatically detect chapters. I selected all my video files (21) and hit the button to auto detect chapters. It came up with 5, which corresponds with the total number of menu pages (one introductory video plus 4 menu pages). I clicked to Apply, but nothing is different. The remote still selects buttons out of order on menu pages.

  • Reading the manual, there is a choice to be made in the beginning of the projectmat the menu page:

The following drop-down menus are available:
    Menus to use
Defines whether the menu should be created as a title and chapter
menu or simply as a title menu. You can also choose not to create a
    menu.

I don't remember seeing this. I believe that I am trying to create a title menu. If the default is title and chapter menu, could this be the source of my problems?

  • PegasusRx,

It's very difficult to understand the exact problem here. The default is to create both title and chapter menus. It has nothing to do with this. Please post a screenshot of your Menu Edit screen.

Also, please explain what you mean when you say that the order is wrong when you use your remote. If your menu is displayed and has four titles, what happens when you press the 3 and OK (or whatever is on your remote)?

    1 2
    3 4

If the layout of your menu is like the above, the lower left video should play.

  • This is in the Advanced Editing Menu. The remote on the bottom right of the screen acts exactly the same way as the remote on a DVD Player does. I have eleven videos on this menu. Each video has a button linked to it. Starting at the video on top, pressing the down button on the remote should go down to the next video. However, it skips that video; its works for a while then skips the 7th video, then works again then skips the last video. You can work with the other remote buttons and eventually get to the videos that were skipped.

  • PegsusRx,

I did a 12 item menu. It seems OK. If I use the up and down arrows, that's what happens. The right or left arrow causes "random" jumping.

    Then, there's this:

  • PegasusRx,

I've tried another similar menu setup in a Blu-ray project instead of AVCHD. Some strange results as I try to back up after going forward to the navigation button. I went back to the AVCHD project and found somewhat similar results. So, I suspect you've stumbled onto an issue here.

  • PegsusRs- Please verify the numbering and link for each button by switching to number and text for the display and then checking the link in the Link To box.

I just tried a little project with a single video in which I created 10 chapters. As a result I have 10 buttons which are linked to individual chapters. As long as I haven't gotten to the end of a video before pressing the forward button, then there is no skipping. It goes to the next chapter. If I was using more videos, I would add a chapter for each video also. Of course, you don't have to do the latter if you start out in DVD, DVD-Video.

  • PegasusRx,

I have no time now to explain this. I'm not sure if I can!

    • PegasusRx,

A little clarification. In my simple case, without navigation button, operation is "normal." With the navigation button placed below the menu items, operation is "normal." However, if the navigation button is moved horizontally away from the menu items above, operation becomes somewhat strange. Namely, if the up arrow is repeatedly pressed, the focus moves from '1' to the navigation button and then back to the menu item list at a location dependent upon the horizontal position of the navigation button (N below):

      X position of N Sequence
      350 N,11,10,9,....,1,N,11,....
      400 N,10,9,....,1,N,10,....
      500 N,9,....,1,N,9,....
      600 N,8,....,1,N,8,....
      700 N,7,....,1,N,7,....
      800 N,6,....,1,N,6,....
      900 N,5,....,1,N,5,....
      1000 N,4,....,1,N,4,....
      1200 N,3,....,1,N,3,....
      1300 N,2,....,1,N,2,....
      1400 N,1,N,1,....
      1500 N,11,....,1,N,11,.... (Normal again???
      -1500 N,6,....,1,N,6,....

Operation using the down arrow is "normal" in all of the above cases for my simple example.

  • OK, guys, i figured it out. Although, still a little quirky with the navigation buttons at the bottom, I am now able to access the list of video titles in order. As it turns out, if you hit the button to "go right", the selection that is made is the "right most" button, which makes sense. However, the selection also takes into account the size of the field of the button. If I make the fields all the same size, then the correct choice will be made made. If one field is more to the right than the others, then it is chosen. So, not only is the x,y position considered, but the program chooses the item that is "most right" . In the picture here, I made the fields all the same length and then the program acted correctly.

By the way, thanks so much for your help. Your work with the position of the navigation button is what lead to my discovery of the field issue. I am thrilled to have solved this issue. Thank you!
    • Pegasus,

You're welcome, and, thank you, too. It's been fun.

It would be really interesting to see what sort of algorithm they use to determine where to go next! In my simple case, no matter what the alignments/sizes of the elements are, it would seem reasonable to expect that clicking the up arrow after clicking the down arrow would return the focus to the item just left.

I may clean up my example a little and submit it to Tech Support. But, then, it'll just be ignored.

      Good luck.

Hey, this took me several hours of trial and error to figure out that all the buttons have to be exactly the same width for the controller action to work as expected (although, Nero Video 2015 still doesn't give me the total customization of controller/button action/navigation I want). I'm so glad to see you have documented the solution.

It is amazing to me that Nero doesn't have the easy button action/navigation customization that the free product DVDStyler does. If DVDStyler only did Blu-rays, the world would be a better place. :)
