Repair audio file links from NRA files

Burning ROM: I want to restructure (relocate) my audio files. This breaks the links within NRA files resulting in loss of track info. It is (was) possible to manually edit the NRA if the new file path had the same length as the original. Is there a better way?

  • I've never heard of the possibity of editing .nra files as you mentioned. That doesn't mean it's not possible since I've never tried it and nobody else has mentioned it.

    Personally, I would recreate the compilation and .nra file after relocating the audio files. The thing that i've never heard anyone mention is the capability of browsing to the files when a .nra file is opened in Burning Rom and the compilation files have been moved. They have added that feature to Nero Video in recent versions.

  • Thanks. I agree it probably applies to all products/config files (Burning ROM, Cover Designer etc.)
    Manual editing is tough since you are modifying a binary file without a robust internal structure. So replacing characters is possible, but not adding or deleting bits of file path - unless you can work out the structure :). Each audio track has its own link, which gets tedious if you have 10 tracks to move. It's an emergency solution but definitely not recommended.
    My audio files are private recordings of classical music concerts. I split them into tracks in the compilation to help the listener. Thus recreating the compilation means saving and restoring manually track titles and start/end splits.
    Moving files is not something I do frequently. A command-line tool would be fine. If I knew the internal structure, I could program it.

  • There is the NeroCMD but I've never used it.

    It sounds to me that you would be better off saving your compilation as an audio file versus a .nra. You can always open it to edit and there's no links.

  • Unfortunatly I have the same problem with .nra files on the backup HDD.
    It is not possible to open these .nra files.

    Any solution would be helpful.

  • Thanks for your support, Wither1.

    Yes, these are.nra file on the backup HDD.
    Unfortunatly I don't know more the original path.

    I guess
    when the path is not changed then the info in the .nra file works fine and
    NERO read it without any error message.

    I thought there is a tool available (by NERO?)
    which can help or repair or open the content of .nra file.

  • Thank you for providing me the file. Now you can delete it.
    The thing is that you moved source files. You could not edit nra files.
    In that case you cannot recover the files if you don ́t know the path.

    I suggest what wither has mentioned in his first answer to recreate the compilation.

    I ́m sorry that I could not help you more than that.

  • Thanks, Jbass.

    Parallel to your effort I found a solution with a simple text editor - like HxD 1.7.7.0.
    The text editor shows the original path on the left side when you scroll down.

    Between each letter there is dot like
    E.:.\.B.l.a.c.k.S.S.D.\.A.l.l._.M.y._.M.u.s.i.c.\.T.h.e. .F.r.o.n. .M.a.l.e. .V.o.i.c.e. .C.h.o.r.\.T.h.e. .F.r.o.n. .M.a.l.e. .V.o.i.c.e. .C.h.o.i.r. .-. .M.y.f.a.n.w.y...w.a.v

    With a text editor like notepad it is possible to delete all dots.
    After cleanup here the orignal path:
    E:\BlackSSD\All_My_Music\The Fron Male Voice Chor\The Fron Male Voice Choir - Myfanwy.wav

    I hope
    when the folder is saved under this path
    then it is possible for NERO to read the .nra file without error message.

  • M L,

    See my contributions to topic Files not found on compilation that's 90% Complete. Now all progress and tracks completely LOST? WHY?!. The NRA to M3U tool referenced there produces:

    The output doesn't appear to be totally correct, but the path appears to be OK?
    • M L,

      The complete filenames without the path:

      Imagine.wav
      What A Wonderful World.wav
      Men Of Harlech.wav
      Two Little Boys (Feat. Rolf Harris).wav

    • M L,

      I think I may have removed too much when I eliminated the 'path'. So, another try:

      Path:
      E:\BlackSSD\All_My_Music\The Fron Male Voice Chor\

      Files:
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Imagine.wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - What A Wonderful World.wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Men Of Harlech.wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Two Little Boys (Feat. Rolf Harris).wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Calon Lan (Feat. Cerys Matthews).wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Sailing By (Shipping Forecast).wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Going Home (With The Salvation Army).wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Home (Feat. Will Martin).wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Myfanwy.wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Ave Maria (Feat. Ann Atkinson).wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Silent Night.wav
      The Fron Male Voice Choir - Pie Jesu (Feat. Ann Atkinson).wav

  • @ML As you have just found ...
    If you just want the paths for the source files, you can use a binary-file editor such as WinVI to open the .NRA files and select the UTF-16 BE option. You should see recognisable paths.
    You can then restore the source files to their original places and the .NRA should open correctly.
    If it's not possible to recreate the paths, with courage and care you can make minor changes to the path strings in a *copy* of the NRA file, for example E:\... => C:\... You should not change the length of the path. If you change the filename, note that there are other strings where this occurs. Manual editing is a sufficient hassle that it should only be considered as a last resort.
    The dots or other symbol you see inbetween letters are 'null' (hex 00) bytes which make up 2-byte (16-bit) Unicode characters. If you delete or change the nulls, I would not expect the path to work.
    I have asked Nero support for the internal file structure but not had a reply yet.
    • nick,

      When I saw that the Java output was incomplete, I tried extracting the filenames from M L's NRA file myself. Just for fun, I've stripped that down to a minimum C# console app - many assumptions, no error checking, minimal testing, etc. "Nero ready" for release?

      using System;
      using System.IO;
      using System.Text;

      namespace ConsoleApp1
      {

      {

      {

      }
      class DoIt
      {
      string[] fileNames =
      {
      @"..\The Fron Male Voice Choir.nra",
      @"..\Audio1.nra",
      @"..\FLAC.nra",
      @"..\ExpressFLAC.nra",
      @"..\WAV.nra",
      @"..\ExpressWAV.nra"
      };
      public DoIt()
      {
      for (int i = 0; i < fileNames.Length; i++)
      {
      readNRA(fileNames[i]);
      }
      }
      public void readNRA(string fileName)
      {
      byte[] fileBytes = File.ReadAllBytes(fileName);
      int nBytes = fileBytes.Length;
      StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();

      Console.WriteLine(nBytes + " bytes read from " + fileName + ".");
      StreamWriter sw = new StreamWriter(fileName + ".txt");

      for (int i = 0; i < nBytes - 5; i++)
      {
      if (fileBytes[i] == 'G' &&
      fileBytes[i + 1] == 'U' &&
      fileBytes[i + 2] == 'L' &&
      fileBytes[i + 3] == 'P')
      {
      for (int k = i + 12; i < fileBytes.Length; k += 2)
      {
      if (fileBytes[k] != 0)
      {
      Console.Write((Char)fileBytes[k]);
      sw.Write((Char)fileBytes[k]);
      }
      else
      {
      Console.WriteLine("");
      sw.WriteLine("");
      break;
      }
      }
      }
      }
      sw.Close();
      }
      }
      }
      }

      Anyway, if you ever actually get anything describing the structure of the NRA files, please post it. And, how about the format of NVC files?

      P.S. If you are an experienced Visual Studio/C# programmer and are disgusted by the code, I apologize!

    Dear Omega Tester,

    You asked:
    "The output doesn't appear to be totally correct, but the path appears to be OK? "
    - Yes. Thanks a lot for your total list too.

    Your recomendation of the free converter from .nra to .m3u is a very helpful solution.

    Hello Nick,

    Regarding recreated paths your idea with replacement from E:\ to C:\ via editor is very good.

    Finally thanks to all for your help.
    From my point view these steps above are good ways
    to work further with reanimated .nra files after moving folders

    @Omega Tester,

    Thanks for your character extract program. However it doesn’t really solve the problem of changing the path names, especially changing their lengths

    So far, I have only had an acknowledgement from Nero support.

    In the meantime I have bitten the bullet and dived into the internal structure of the NRA files. Being a bit of a dinosaur, I have used Perl code to help with the analysis and this has now evolved into a program which can handle listing contents and editing of path and file names in bulk. Nero BR accepted my first edited file today.
    Credit should go to M.L. for providing a file with unusual and long path names. The differences between this and my files was useful in understanding the structure.

    The program (NRApathedit) is not yet (if ever) ready for public release. While waiting for an official response from Nero, I invite anyone who needs NRA files editing to submit them as email attachments to my username at vangemeren dot plus dot com specifying what needs changing..

    I don’t have Nero Video on this system. I do have some NVC files from 2009; they have no obvious structure, not even visible character strings. Not much hope there.

  • I got an unhelpful response from Nero because I did not reference recent paid software. However I don't need the documentation now, having completed the file reorganisation mentioned in the top post.
    The program is finished (always room for improvement!) in that it does now support NeroCDAV5.0.0 It's up to Nero to express any interest.
    The invitation above still stands, including for users transferring to Linux etc.
