I’m frustrated

SecurDisc burning freezes

Nero + Nero Express 2018 are burning pretty much everything I throw at them, apart from SecurDiscs (CD, DVD and Blu-Ray). When I try, the program freezes when all the source data has been written and the checksums would be added. This happens during a maximum transfer rate test and during a burn. It DOESN'T happen when I'm burning to an hard disc image though.

I've tried a clean re-install, various different media, a different drive, having the source data on an SSD - all with no success. What's going on?

  • Hi Dan-

    Please go here-

    C:\Users\"your username"\AppData\Roaming\Nero\Nero 19\Nero Burning ROM

Open the Nerohistory.log file. You can either try to copy and paste the contents here or you can upload the log file to a cloud service like dropbox and provide a link.

If you want to copy and paste it here, you will probably have to split it between up to three Reply boxes because a Reply box can only contain a certain amount of text. So, after the first paste operation, click on Reply. Check to see if the whole log is there. If not, get the remainder of the log and paste it into one or more additional Reply boxes, as necessary.

  • Thanks.

    Are you using Burning Rom?

It just dawned on my little brain that one can't burn a SecurDisc in Nero Express, which I thought you are using based on Nero+Nero Express. You can only opt to do a SecurDisc "scan."

The only burn that shows an error indicates that the selection you made and the disc type in the drive are different.

If you're using Burning Rom, what are you selecting when you open it?

  • Thanks Omega Tester for opening the log.

Wither 1, Nero Express *does* let you create and burn SecurDisc. It's the latter 3 options on the Data menu. So I select one of those, no encryption, no digital signature, unlimited data redundancy, drag and drop my files.

On the next screen, I choose a maximum transfer rate test, the slowest burn option available for my media (usually something between 2.4 and 4x) and SecurDisc surface scan. I start the burn.

If I've chosen the maximum transfer rate test, the freeze takes place during that. If I go straight for the burn, the freeze happens then. I have to resort to stopping the process via Task Manager to get the program to close.

The error you mention was generated because I'm an idiot and put the wrong media in the drive. I swapped it for the right media.

Just a thought: previous versions of Nero had an uninstall tool that cleared out any registry entries and made sure there was no trace left. Is there one for Nero 2018? So I can make sure any reinstall is done on a truly clean system.

  • Hi Dan-

Would you provide a screenshot of where you say you can select SecurDisc? The things you mention are not the same thing as burning a SecurDisc.

  • Thanks Dan-

For the last few days (some people will say longer), I've been forgetful or not paying enough attention to detail.

Would you delete your existing log file and then try another burn? Post the new log file.

  • Well now, here's the thing. I removed a RAM disc program I was using (SoftPerfect RamDisk) AND I decided to run Nero Express in Administrator mode. And now it works. So I don't know what part of this solved the problem. But it's solved. If you still want to see the log file, here it is:

  • It's quite possible that the problem is with the discs. I looked at the key qualifier code for the error in the original log and it appears there was a problem with Windows conversing with the drive firmware. The biggest thing I saw was that the number of available sectors on the original disc is lower than expected (221K vs 229 K expected).
