  • Not a good way to start out the new year is it. :(

Every once in a while, someone reports this issue and typically it has something to do with the original files.

Are you using Nero Video, Make Slide Show?

Are you adding any effects, transitions, etc.?

Try something for me. It should only take about 5 minutes.

Create a slide show using the 10 default pictures in Nero Video and adding no effects or transitions. Burn it to your hard drive. Drag and drop the Video_TS folder into Nero MediaHome. Is everything correct?

  • yes im using the make a slide show
no i havent added anything extra at all just the pictures and the music
the pictures turned out fine with default and the third video of all the exact same pictures turned out fine as well... it seems to choose randomly when and which pictures to flip

  • As I understand it, you tried what I asked and there were no problems. In addition, you burned your project again and it was fine. Is that correct?

  • the main problem will now be that that it took three trys for this one and there is still about 3 plus gb of room left for more slide shows... so now im wondering how many times ill have to play this game to get a full proper cd...

  • It usually takes 3-5 business days to get a response. In addition, I expect that they're playing catch-up after the holidays. Hang in there.

  • Well I did not receive a reply from nero and im not sending a third email... But on the plus note i believe i may have just maybe ( knocking on wood) figured out what you have to do to fix it for any of those in the future running into this problem. It seems you have to run the detect chapters tool you can not let it automatically make chapters for you ( i am not sure on this i have at least one more disk of pictures to make i will update one more time to confirm that it works on the second disk) this takes i guess depending on your computer i have a fairly good and fast one an extra 20 mins for alot of pictures. im halfway thru the first slide show thou and havent seen a single upside down picture

  • oh on one more note theres another fix i just dont know what it is cause i did not do this for the first slideshow i fixed that came out right ( there are three slide shows on one disk) the first one just came out right somehow after making numerous coasters but it did make the next two slide shows proper once i did it that way

  • That's interesting. If i get some time, I'll check it out.
    • I opened Nero Video and selected Make Slide Show. I dragged the 10 default photos to the storyboard. I then selected Next and then DVD-Video for the project. In the Content screen, I clicked on Automatically Detect Chapters and it found 10, which I applied. In the menu editing screen, I elected to not create a menu. In the preview screen, everything played fine. I than burned it to my hard drive. The resulting Video_TS folder plays correctly in Nero MediaHome.

I don't doubt what you said about automatic chapter selection since it worked for you and I don't have your files to test. You can send an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com to see if they have any ideas.

  • a uolgna,

I tried a quick experiment in Nero 2014 Video (I don't have 2015). I opened Nero 2014 Video, Make Advanced movie. I added the 10 sample pictures to the timeline, clicked Next, and selected DVD-Video. At the Content screen, I auto-detected chapters, then proceeded to the Burn Options screen to write to my hard drive. The write seemed normal but failed as it finished:

I've uploaded a video to YouTube that shows that there is no error without chapters, but the error occurs when chapters are added:

I have done other tests where I add 10 chapters manually and get the error. I've also used ten copies of the sample video and then used the "add a chapter for each video" option - the error occurred.

I think you have discovered something here!

  • Thanks for the tests Omega Tester. Good to see you in here helping.

a uologna is using Make Slide Show and that's what I tested in. However, I just tried it in v14 Make Slide Show and Make Advanced Movie and got no errors. I burned the one from Make Slide Show and it was fine. It didn't bother burning Make Advanced Movie. I took it all the way to the burn screen without errors.

Of course, this is on Vista.

  • ive discovered ( prob didnt notice before cause i just wanted it done) that its the portrait photos that will flip none of the ones that come in from in the make a slide show are that they are all landscape thats prob why you never get the upside-down error

  • a uolgna,

After seeing your last post, I did more tests. This one has been very enjoyable to play with - thank you! Before I go any further, let me just say that the problem I reported above has gone away, for now. I assume it will be back..

Anyway, I have been able to replicate your problem and overcome it in a number of ways. I have some iPhone .jpeg photos taken by my niece recently. Some are portrait; some are landscape. In Nero Video, the Metadata indicates that each is 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high. By using Picasa, I found that there is a field in the metadata of the files indicating the photo's orientation. If the "portrait" oriented files are opened in the Windows Paint program and then saved as .jpg files, the resolution is changed from 320x240 to 240x320 with a corresponding change in orientation. If the "converted" files are used in a Nero Video slideshow, they are not turned upside down.

So, that's one way to fix it. Another way to fix it is to resize any of the pictures by a very slight, unnoticable amount:

    How's that for bizarre?

I also used MediaHome to make a DVD - the pictures were right-side up in the finished product. Unfortunately, I had to use another program to read the DVD - MediaHome gets an error reading a DVD it made.
The DVD can be imported/played in Nero 2014 Video and Nero 2014 Recode.

I could go on and on!

I should mention that using Picasa to export the files also solves the problem and allowing you to "convert" all of the files at one time. However, most of the metadata disappears.

Note that all of my testing was done using Nero 2014 Platinum under Windows 8.1 Pro.

  • So much work for something they should have already tested and fixed themselves crazy! well at least this forum has a solution actually many solutions which will help everyone who now does a google search to figure out why its doing that, i couldnt find a decent solution no matter how much i googled and i need to makes disks for Anglou Photography customers. nero btw never got back to me no reply at all after 3 emails..... and a 2 week time span....
    • a uolgna,

I've seen similar issues on the forum in the past, but couldn't replicate them and never saw a solution. This time I was able to replicate the bug after you mentioned the portrait photos being the problem and my accidentally having iPhone photos! You didn't mention where your photos came from. Did they have the same "Orientation" issues? (Photos from my own cameras that I used previously have the orientation field set to normal and I have to rotate the "portrait" photos).

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "so much work"? The second "workaround" I mentioned involves a minor adjustment to a single picture to fix the entire project. Maybe I didn't make that clear? It is very strange.

As for Tech Support, you don't have to spend very much time on the forum to see that your impression is fairly widespread! I suppose you could try again just to see if they have any intention of fixing this bug.

  • I thought you had to adjust each portrait photo in the slide show if you just have to adjust just one and that fixes them all then thats not so bad guess i read it wrong still kind of a weird bug they should have been able to catch thou
as for where my pictures came from there were maybe a couple of phone pictures but most of the upside down ones were from my canon t3i

I sent three emails and didnt get a reply to even one of them so im not gonna waste my time anymore i have a solution and can give customers thier disks thats all i need thanks for your help!
    • a uolgna,

My results were for iPhone photos - it may be that adjusting a single picture wouldn't fix your case. Also, I may not have been clear that one minor adjustment to one of the landscape photos worked just as well as an adjustment to one of the "problem" portrait photos. If you test it, please post the result.

I agree that you would probably be wasting your time appealing to Tech Support. Moreover, it shouldn't be necessary since:

There are supposedly 25 of those employees participating in the forum. Perhaps one of them will be conscientious enough to report this:

Addendum: I think that the example given here, indicates that the Canon cameras store "orientation" in the same manner the iPhone does. It also mentions that the portrait photos are not displayed properly in Internet Explorer - something I did notice with my niece's photos:

But, Nero's bugs are not caused by Internet Explorer or Firefox!
