I’m frustrated

Unable to backup files with long paths & file names

I am trying to get support for BackItUP 2016. Support link closed and not accepting my serial number.

I am trying to backup files to external hard disk but they are failing with the following message:

The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.

The path & file name are 210 characters including spaces & file extensions. File name including file extension <40 characters.

How can we back up these files?

Apart from Wither 1 reply 6 months ago I have had no answers from Nero. Very disappointed. I want my money back.

    Dear Nicholas,

Thank you very much for using our product and sharing us with the detailed description via our support team.

We are able to reproduce the issue and the team will look into it.
Meanwhile, as a workaround, please use "Snapshot" backup instead of "Copy" backup.
Please note that Snapshot backup behaves differently than Copy backup - whereas Copy backup always "update" the backup, Snapshot backup keeps older version and backup the difference. (incremental backup).

    Best Regards,
    Nero BackItUp Team

    So, is the issue fixed?

I'm getting this too, on many, many of my files:

"The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters."

The pathnames+filenames are well under 200 characters, I can only think that part of it is related to how BackItUp stores them. For instance, I have a recent backup file named

    "B:\Nero BackItUp\4a3c926f-e230-48ef-8509-d511d355dcfe\C_@#@AECE0C03"

If it's trying to store my files in that folder (i.e., after the program has added a full *64 characters* to the file names on its own), no wonder so many of them are choking!

There needs to be a way to have Nero use backup folders with *much* shorter names, otherwise I'm going to have to move/rename several hundred of my files that seem to only just top 200 on their own.

This isn't acceptable. There's no reason for such a long and complicated pathname for the backups. Why not save it under:

    "B:\Nero BackItUp\D's Backup\C_"
    "B:\Nero BackItUp\D's Backup2\C_"
    "B:\Nero BackItUp\D's Backup3\C_"

That's just halved the added number of characters right there. Even better, I'd prefer to be able to specify:

    "B:\Backups\10-08-18\C_"
    "B:\Backups\10-08-18-1\C_"

    or

    "B:\Backups\main\C_"
    "B:\Backups\main2\C_"

    or best of all

    "B:\Backup1\C_"
    "B:\Backup2\C_"

But setting the program to have a character limit on file pathnames, and then having a non-customizable system that uses almost exactly *25%* of that length just for it's own purposes is not acceptable!

At least change the error message to say:

"The specified path, file name, or both are too long. NeroBackItUp uses 64 characters for its own record keeping, thus your file name must be less than 196 characters, and your directory name must be less than 188 characters."

Regardless: I have never had this problem with another backup program, all of which allowed me to save my files in whatever directory I specified (where I could make it a sane length!).

Unless this is fixed, I'm going to be going back for a refund too. This is ridiculous!
