Unblock DVD format

I have a project from Nero Video that was burnt to DVD.
I now need to revisit the project and change the video format to a higher resolution but the 'Movie Options' says the formats are defined by the Recording Format options I chose but there are no 'options' in the DVD-Video that I can change i.e. the Video Format is greyed out on MPEG-2.
The project also always opens in the Burn DVD screen rather than the edit screen.
How do I 'remove' this DVD format' so that I can change the Movie options
(currently I can only select TV Standard and TV Widescreen, the other format are greyed out and none of them are the HD format I want to use.

  • Which option do I use (I assume AVCHD) if all I want is to export the project to a file (MP4)? And what medium? If I select harddrive I get different settings in th edit page to all my other projects.
If I make a selection from that button, it wipes my project file!. It does let me select the resolution I want but without my project file.......
If I go to the edit section and select recording format options I get an extra box tagged DVD. None of my other projects have that. I am sure that is where the problem is - I need to 'remove' any association with DVD and just get back to a regular editable NVC file with no association with being saved to DVD ie I haven't gone to the 'Create a DVD' stage....

  • to add further, when I select 'NEXT' from the 'EDIT' screen I want to go here not to the 'DVD Content' screen. I am sure that if it went to the here screen that it would not have the lock on DVD

  • You cannot reformat to a higher resolution than your original video was made of. MPEG-2 is an old compression method. Which fileformat is your original video?

AVCHD is a format made by Panasonic, which produce files with extension m2ts.
This is a high resolution format, which you can record on a DVD - but you have to use a BluRay player to play your DVD. You cannot change from an old mpeg2 to a avchd format. You can reformat your mpeg2 video (Nero recode) to an mpeg-4 compression, which produce mp4 files - but you cannot expect the resolution to be better than the original video - its just a better compression!

  • I have my original NVC project, so why can't I set the resolution of that ie why can't I go in to Movie Options while in the EDIT mode and select a higher resolution? I can do it in all my other projects, none of which have the 'DVD Content' as the 'NEXT' screen from the 'EDIT' window.
It even says that the options available are dictated by the recording format (which is obviously MPEG2 - DVD) but I want to REMOVE that DVD aspect.
I don't want a DVD and am not interested in doing DVD - I only want to export my project.
I don't understand why the NVC file with all its original images and imported videos (hires .MTS from from video camera) are not permanently locked to the fact that I once exported to a DVD. I should be able to move from the 'EDIT' window (in its own specific format) and export/burn/?? to whatever media I want and at that point select the recording format - which should not be back-imposed on the original edit file.
That would imply that if I make a project and export to a lores format for, say, FaceBook, that I can't then burn the same project to a higher resolution DVD, nor export to a super hires media file.... that can't be right

  • Laurie,

Here's a YouTube video I made showing a DVD project loaded and then changed to an AVCHD project to allow HD exports:

Note that the source has 1920x1080 resolution. The same thing could be done with a lower resolution source but scaling it up would probably reduce the output quality.

  • Hi,
Thanks for that. I had already tried that, but tried again today. But as before, with limited success.
It does let me change the movie resolution but it is still restricted.
I have check the contents and I have MTS at 1920x1280 files and MP4 at 1280x720 but when I go to the DVD it is 720x576.
Now let's ignore the DVD (I don't want it!).
I did as you did and change the format option to (in this case AVHCD) and selected harddrive. I am puzzled here why I have never had to select harddrive before and why I only get my local drives and not the network drives I use for these projects.... anyway.
I have attached 4 screenshots, the first two are from the problem project, the last two are from one of my other projects.
In the 1st image you can see the recording options I have and notice that there is a AVCHD tab (this is after the changes in your reply) but note I have VERY limited options with most of these being greyed out.
The 2nd picture is the movie options. Again, some options but limited. i can't, for example, change the frame rate.
The 3rd picture is the recording options for the good project. Note NO DVD/AVHCD options AT ALL (that is what I want!!!!)
The 4th picture is the good move options. Note firstly that the list of options is upside down compared to the bad project. Note also I have more ooptions and can change all of them.

An alternative way to explain what I expect...
After editing a project I click the NEXT button and am presented with a 'what do you want to do now?' screen
This is what I consider to be the next logical screen irrespective of what I have done with the project with regards to whatever it is I want to do. From here I can export to a desired movie format and get the maximum quality achievable given the selected format and the content resolution.
With the bad project I don't get this screen. I am automatically taken to the 'DVD Content' screen. This is wrong. I want the 'next' screen.
How do I remove the fact that Nero has decided I can never get to this screen anymore in the normal run of things?
Even with your changes, I am NOT getting the 'normal' flow I expect and consequently not getting the correct features/options I expect.
    Sorry for the long reply

  • Laurie,

A few years ago, changes were made so that the user could complete a project (DVD, Blu-ray, etc.) and then change to a different project type and burn the same video and menu. Before that, after creating and burning a DVD project, the user would have to start over from the beginning. So, in that regard, things are much, much better!

In the future, you can avoid the problem by saving your edits before "Next"; then, save it under a different name after creating a disc project, etc.

  • Ah, so you are saying that because the NVC file was made in Nero 15 that it is now 'locked' to DVD.
Is there NO way to unlock it? Seems a bit (LOT) remiss of Nero to not allow 'unlocking' of a NVC file. To force a user to spend several days going through the whole process of recreating a project seems incredibly rude given they have 'fixed' things

  • Huh?
I have a dozen other NVC projects that I am using in NV18, most of which were made in earlier versions of NV and ALL work perfectly okay and exactly as I have described ie I can freely change the resolution of the movie, they ALWAYS go to the 'what do you want to do' screen when I click the NEXT button, and none of them have the DVD/AVHCD tab in the recording format options...................
This one project is the only one, at the moment, that is coming up with this stupid DVD association in it and not allowing me to update the resolution of the project. ALL of the other projects were made for a lower resolution screen, but now I am updating (and have updated most of them now) to a higher resolution.
And yes, at least 2 of the successfully converted projects were saved to DVD and DON'T have that problem so presumably this problem one was done on an early version of NV. Why can't Nero simply allow you to 'import' an old project file and allow it to be 'updated' to the latest project format?

  • It opens in the Content screen. You have to then select EDIT to get back to the editing screen.
So no, based on the previous response, this must have been 'saved' while in the Content screen - that is what I need to break.

  • Yes I know, what I am asking is why can't Nero 'import' and 'old version' NVC file and drop the content aspect as they do now?

  • Laurie,

Although there's a note at the upper right indicating that Nero employees are here to help, you may have noticed that they aren't. Perhaps you can get an answer from the Tech Support team. I can't answer questions that begin with "Why" and I doubt that any other user can.

    Support Issues

Help with issues involving recent Nero versions can be obtained directly from Nero by using the email contact form at Technical Support via e-mail. This requires a valid product serial number which has the form XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX (8 groups of 4 characters/digits separated by dashes. Note: The serial number will not have the letter 'O'. Since this is a public forum, DO NOT post your serial number. If your serial number is not accepted, use the contact form at Nero Customer Service.
