Uninstall Nero (including all and every registry entry)

How do I completely uninstall Nero? By this, I mean how do I also remove all references to Nero from my Windows 7 registry? Nero came with my system already installed, some trial software, got no idea what version it is/was. I have uninstalled Nero as I don't want it, don't need it.

Why doesn't Nero remove all references from the registry?

I'm forever removing entries from my registry by use of cleaning software (JV 16 Powertools) relating to empty Nero referenced folders (and other Nero referenced items). One would think they would be gone forever but no, somehow they keep returning.

I've just searched on "Nero" within my registry and there are 2342 entries, most from what I can see are in fact Nero related. They shouldn't be there if I've uninstalled Nero.

Here's a couple of entries:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\NeroBackItUp.Files7.nba\ : Nero BackItUp Archive File
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\CoverDes.exe\shell\open\FriendlyAppName : Nero CoverDesigner Essentials

I only post these entries as it may reveal which version of Nero was installed.

What program do I delete to stop this?

Steve.

  • I'm not aware of any Windows software which removes all registry entries or C: drive entries when it is uninstalled. See my last paragraph in regards to uninstalling older versions of Nero.

There is practically no way to remove all Nero registry items. I say that because there are many things which don't have the word "Nero" associated with them.

What you got with your system is a free version of Nero with limited capabilities. That's why it is called "Essentials". It appears it is v7 and that surprises me because Windows 7 came out in 2009 and, by that time, Nero v9 was available.

If it is truly Nero 7, the correct way to uninstall it is to use the Nero General Clean Tool and not via the Control Panel because v9 and earlier did not use a Windows installer. However, the General Clean Tool won't remove all those registry entries. I'll assume you have a 64 bit system. If you go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero, what is shown there?

  • Thanks for responding. There is no reference to Nero under Program Files (x86) or the newer Program Files folder.

Now to check out the Nero General Clean Tool.

  • Downloaded and ran the Nero General Clean Tool. It claimed that Nero 7 was installed. Anyway, uninstalled it from the tool hopefully that's the end of it.

    Thanks for your help.

  • I’m FRUSTRATED AND UPSET
You would think Nero, in it's infinite wisdom and constant software updates to police your version would use such skills to do a better job at cleaning up their mess during installation. Nice software, but very inefficient when it comes to cleaning up after itself. Even Windows recognized the value in cleaning up behind itself, albeit better than it once did.
I have been a fan of Nero for years. Now that I am trying to clean up, out, and do a clean install, I see what others have b been complaining about for years!
GET WITH IT NERO! THIS IS FRUSTRATING!
I uninstalled for a clean install of Platinum 2017, and I STILL see old Nero crap throughout my system, to include the root directory!!!
Is there a sufficient tool to remove the crap/????/ Is there a guide pinpointing all paths infected by Nero's ill conceived install and uninstall practices????
    HELP!!!!!
I think it's time to stop blindly lending my support for years upon end, believing a software company would have progressed to be more efficient at least for the consumer.

    • I tried this route of deleting the AHEAD folder and it says that this requires administrator privileges. Is it safe to move forward and delete these files?
    • I don't know which version of Nero you uninstalled or if you have another version installed. If you don't have another installed, I don't see any reason why you can't delete that folder.

  • There are 2 third-party programs which may help with removal of outstanding Registry items left behind after de-installation:-

    1. Revo Uninstaller - which can uninstall existing programs, and find registry items left behind which you can select and remove, as well as finding Registry items left behind relating to a program already uninstalled

    2. CCleaner - The Registry Cleaner will identify Registry items which are no longer required (and which are often left behind after software deletion) . Simply select the items you need to delete, and press the fix items button.

Free versions are available for both of the above programs.

  • I’m running in circles
What if the problem stems from a corrupt registry entry?
I am stuck unable to un-install nero 7 "Shell messenger database is corrupt or missing" or similar.
And because there was a Nero10 (un-installed) I can't install Nero 7.5.19.1 because it thinks there is a newer Nero. 7 came with the external burner so was more recent.
Support for 7 runs in a continuous cycle from Nero to cleverbridge to Nero. a bridge I'll grant you but clever?

FWIW I found a Nero registry entry that was corrupt eg "C?\blah\blah\Nero7 etc"
    deleting it made no difference.

  • Fred-

Are you using the Nero General Clean Tool for uninstalling v7? That's used for v7 through v9 because they didn't use a Windows installer.
