Video goes blank, but audio stays, and Second video on title menu stops DVD playback.

Bugs with Nero Video 2018... Video goes blank with only audio on rendered DVDs (randomly) after cross-fade transition, and second video/movie on a disk stops the DVD from playing when selected (also randomly by compilation) Getting frustrated and wasting DVDs :-( because it won't let me burn to an ISO so I can test it first. I'm not happy with this software.

  • Hi Stephen-

You can burn your project to hard drive rather than disc in the Nero Video burn options. That would create a Video_ts folder which you can play by dragging and dropping it into Nero MediaHome (if it comes with Nero Video) or something like VLC Player.

Seems to me that this issue came up a month or so go but I haven't look for the thread. I'll have to check it out tomorrow.

  • The second menu selection stopping playback I discovered was the software I decided to use for testing (that mounts nero images as virtual drives), so the issue doesn't appear to come up with an actual burn.

But the Video going blank is a definite issue.

I also get areas of video that get horribly degraded and blurry with pixel trails, then the next clip is completely clear (and yet all the clips are from the same Canon SLR at the same video quality settings). And when I use the multi-pass conversion that is supposed to make the quality better, it makes the video quality considerably worse. The best results I get are on standard settings. None of the features that say they are supposed to improve the quality, do anything at all to improve quality, but make it worse.

To get the video cross-fade transition to not black out video, I seem to have to load the project, play it through the transitions (without editing anything) and then continue on from there. It is like it is not finding the video clip location, unless I actually play through it first.

  • The problem I was referring to is the one concerning the cross fade transition. This is the thread I was referring to-

    http://forum.nero.com/nero_eng/topics...

I said 1 month ago but can't believe that was 3 months ago. I'm getting older faster. :D

Do your projects have the video on multiple tracks, as in that example?

You also have a different problem with the degraded video. For the video you saw that on, does it always happen with that video?
    • Some transitions are on the second Video Track as JPG images. I will have to look at the DVD again, I deleted the messed up image file. Maybe it isn't transitioning back to the first track? I don't get the black background issue with the cross-fade that was mentioned in the other post, but I did get a thin line down the left side where the JPG didn't completely cover the first track video (like the image got offset 3 pixels) Didn't happen in all the renderings I did.

The degraded video occurs in the same project. The files were recorded at 720p on a Canon T6s. it seems to alternate to every other clip, and they were all on the same track. (1080 was too much to convert to DVD... last time I tried 1080 it took almost 2 days)

Also, just a side note, the first time I ran the program after the initial install it crashed. (Always a bad sign)

  • Have Issues with Nero Video 2018, Video going blank is one, another is the program is not responding at a fast enough speed causing problems

  • Stephen-

In your initial post, you said cross-fade. As I understand it now, you're not using the crossfade effect. You're using a JPG for the transition. Correct me if I'm wrong so that I don't go in the wrong direction and waste our time.

I should mention that you can address this with tech support rather than continuing on with me.

Putting the JPGs or another video on video track 2 should not cause the problem with the blank video. I don't think they're related. There are other threads where people have reported the blank video/audio only issue.

If you want to precisely locate the JPGs relative to the underlying video, zoom the timeline by moving the slider at the bottom of the page. That should help you with the thin line problem.

In regards to the degraded video, what is the duration of your project when this happens?

In addition, DVD-Video is limited to 720x so trying to use 1080 is a waste of time. You need to burn either AVCHD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs to achieve that and you wouldn't make a 1080i setting when you have 720x. That would result in things like you're seeing now.

  • I am placing the JPG on the other track with the cross-fade effect on the JPG. It works when I playback the preview. If I save the project and load it later, then compile a video, problems happen. If I load the project, then go back and play through each transition first, then compile the video, it goes away.

The problem with the underlying video on the left edge occurs if I load the project, then select the 2 pass encoding method. Single pass does not do it.

So as far as I'm concerned, as a person who used to write their own software, this software is full of bugs, and doesn't seem to have been fully tested and fixed before release. I'm just glad I got it at a reduced price. There is absolutely no way I'd pay over $100.00 for a package like this (A complete clone of Corel's video studio 12 - nearly identical in every way except that this reads my 720p videos and studio 12 (x2) won't).

  • I think the line is a result of the higher quality provided in a 2-pass option. As you noted, 2-pass doesn't doesn't always result in better quality but it should never result in degraded video unless your project in longer than about 1.5 hours and Fit to disc has to choose a different level of quality. You didn't identify the duration of your project. Please do.

I've never tried placing the cross-fade effect on the video 2 line so I created a project using a video provided by Omega Tester (one of the other volunteers). In the Movie Options, I chose TV Widescreen since I assume your videos are 16:9 and are 720x... (as you indicated). I added the Flower Meadow Video to the first video on video track 1. I then took one of the default photos and increased it's duration. I then added the crossfade to video track 2 and increased it's duration to 8 seconds. Nero Video indicated adding the crossfade was not allowed but it did allow it. I then played the project back in the editing screen and the only anomaly I could see is that it temporarily showed part of the Flower Meadow video while it was going through the crossfade. I think this was because of the increased duration of the crossfade. I then burned the project as a DVD-Video to my hard drive. The resulting .vob played the same in Nero MediaHome as it did in Nero Video.

The project on the timeline can be seen by downloading this file-

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/bekqergo9uq...

The .vob from the burn can be downloaded using this link-

I didn't emphasize that I used TV Widescreen in the Movie Options. I didn't mention that option in our previous discussion. Sorry about that. :(
