Nero Wave Editor Severe distortion on playback
I was forced to re-install Nero due to a total failure of the Windows 10 Home 1803. All the software installed correctly but the 2017 Wave Editor plays back with severe distortion with a rapid pulse (motorboating?) and it is completely unusable. I have experienced this in the past but the later versions did not have it until today. The Wave Editor worked perfectly before the crash and is my main Nero tool in the box.
Your help will be appreciated. Is it a feedback problem?
Best wishes,
Bob

No, it is still the same. There has been no suggestions to solve the problem. Windows 10 does not like my machine and I don't like Win 10 either! To edit a sound file I use the XP Pro which is a dual-boot on this machine. No problems with XP! I was thinking of re-installing my Win 7.

Which version of Nero do you have?
You should download the latest version of WaveEditor from nero.com, downloads, Nero Free Tools. -
-
I am using the version number 15.0.1.0 Only downloaded from the Nero site a few weeks ago. It did appear to be the latest. The same program running on my machine with XP Pro works well.

I don't know what 15.0.1.0 is. That's a version number for Nero v2014 but it's not up to date. Open WaveEditor and click on Help, About............ The latest version is 15.0.6.
Do you mind uploading one of your problem audio files to something like Dropbox.com? Then, share it, create and link and then post the link here. -

Sorry, yes the version is 15.0.6000.
The audio files work perfectly when I run them using the XP Pro that is also in the same machine as a dual-boot. I do suspect that it is Windows 10 that is at fault not your software.
I had been using Wave Editor without trouble on Win 10 until the versions 1803 and now 1809 were installed.
I also have a problem with the Creative software, so it is not just you! Micro$oft are the ones to blame, they are trying to force us to use their software, they are not your friends or ours!

A problem with Creative (your sound card) may be causing that problem.
If you go to Control Panel, Sound.............. is there a problem shown for SB Audiology?
Which sound card do your have? Do you have the latest Creative driver for it? -
-
In January this year, my system crashed and needed a clean re-install. The new Win 10 version was 1803 and will not recognise the Creative software on the installation disk. The Windows updater installed the driver which is 6.0.240.15 The card is an SB X-Fi Titanium. There was no problem with this at all until the crash and I do suspect Windows.
I am reluctant to purchase a more recent card from them in case that does not work either and I would then be the poorer and still with no good sound card. There is a built in sound device from Realtek but this has never been used, in fact it is disabled and has been since I had the computer some 7 years ago. The amplifier is external made by Cambridge Audio. Having no Creative software in the machine means that I do not have a reliable sound player. Using the XP Pro, all this works perfectly well using the same software and data.
I am not very happy and it is no fault of either Nero or Creative.
Yes, I use the XP for listening to music, the Win 10 is only used for news and general speech.
Many thanks for taking the time to listen to my sorrows and hopefully suggest a remedy. New computer with different software?

Since the disc may not have the latest drivers and software, I suggest installing the package here-

The one from Feb 19.

I have installed to latest version of Creative driver. This has made no difference, it is possible that the driver for Win 19 had already been installed by Win 10 updater.
I have recorded a short sample of WaveEditor playing part of Beethoven Sym 6. This is a OneDrive link.

You can tell that I am not very pleased! -

In Device Manager, what is the Creative driver version shown for your card?
Earlier on, I asked you to upload a file that is playing poorly. Would you upload one so I can see if it's a Nero problem? -
-
The driver is: 6.0.240.24 dated 19 Feb 2019
I did send a link to the recording in my last reply, I repeat it:

As I understand it, the audio file you provided is a "recording" of WaveEditor playing back an audio file that you opened in it. I need the original file you used before opening it in WaveEditor.

The original file was selected randomly from a large collection.
Beethoven Symphony number 6 played by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The clip is from part of the second movement. The whole work is about 42mins.

The original 42 minute file plays fine in WaveEditor 15.0.6000 with Realtek HD on my system.
So the Creative device / driver has a problem?
I had another Windows Cumulative update go through today and I noticed some guff about certain audio devices perhaps having an issue.
Microsoft suggested selecting the "Default" audio device to overcome issues?
Don't know if anything like that could help with your problem though. -

Robert,
Your file plays fine on my laptop (IDT HD Audio) in Nero WaveEditor, Daum PotPlayer, VLC Player, Windows Media Player, etc. Are you able to play the file in other apps?
It also plays fine in the free Audacity Audio Editor -

There are no problems in playing any sounds on this computer, the only difficulties arise using Nero Wave Editor 15.0.1.0. I have tried it with the input connector from the audio player disconnected in case it was feedback but that made no difference.
The good news is that I have now installed the Wave Editor from Nero 7. The first time that you actually had money from me! It works as it should and I really prefer the page set-up to the the one in 15! It will save me having to reboot the machine any time I need to use Wave Editor.
The program that I have installed is 3.10.1.0 dated 22 Jun 2007. It does ask for the updater to be run but that is not a problem and it does work on Win 10 which I did not really expect.
I seem to recall that a while ago there was a similar problem with Wave Editor but I have no idea how or why it was cured.

Due to technical difficulties, I can only use WaveEditor in v10 (v5.10.10...... Your file plays fine there.
-
-
Yes, it plays fine here too as long as I do not use 15.
There must be some problems between my Win 10 and Nero Wave Editor 15, this problem only began after the clean reinstall in January.
Anyway, when I need to edit a sound file I can do it with the trusty Nero 7!
I shall be reluctant to purchase further software due to this problem, will it happen with something else from Nero?
I am very surprised because everything else works as it should. Perhaps a new version is called for, it is three years old now.
Best wishes,

Nero no longer supports the free tools. They might make some changes if some major problem comes up. I forgot about that when I mentioned how to get tech support.

Well, after all this back and forward emails I have found the answer and as you might expect very simple!
First it sounded like the effect stutter but this can only be included to a loaded file and is not switchable. Then looking along the menu bar I spied Plugins and in this there is VST settings and in that there is Save/Output settings and scrolling down it to Bit depth during playback and this was set to 24bit. Changing the setting to 16bit cured it.
I suppose that my old WaveEditor was correctly set and the reinstall set it as a 24 bit default. Most of my files are 24bit saved using Soundtrax and 24 bit is available in X-Fi from Creative.
No doubt a rare fault but worth remembering for the next unfortunate that has had a reinstall and not been able to set program back to how it was.
A very interesting experience which I hope not to repeat. Thank you for your help and patience.

Glad you figured it out. I was getting ready to get into the settings this morning but my girl was going to the doctors and I didn't have time. Not that I would have found what you did.
Enjoy! -
