What difference is there between each pair 'CD-ROM VS. CD±R', and 'DVD-ROM VS. DVD±R'

Hi

I heard and sometimes see in the Internet such types of optical disc::

CD±R, DVD±R, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM

Although I have read Pre-recorded DVDs are mass-produced using molding machines that physically stamp data onto the DVD. Such discs are known as DVD-ROM, because data can only be read and not written or erased. Blank recordable DVD discs (DVD-R and DVD+R) can be recorded once using a DVD recorder and then function as a DVD-ROM. Rewritable DVDs (DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM) can be recorded and erased many times.

I am still confused: Thus, could you please correct me if I was wrong in this table below or not?

  • Looks good to me. You have a very good handle on the type of discs. The only times that a "-" or "+" becomes significant is when a optical drive is vintage, such as pre-2004, which is before "+" technology was available and when a standalone drive requires a certain type of disc. For instance, when I create a DVD-Video disc, the only type of disc my Toshiba standalone drive will tolerate is a "+" disc. Don't ask me why. I don't know. I should also note that the different types of discs become an issue when a person is creating a DVR (editable disc).

  • Could you please reply to my questions which is what difference is there between each pair 'CD-ROM VS. CD±R', and 'DVD-ROM VS. DVD±R'

First of all: my Optical drive is: LightScribe SuperMulti DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support, and with the capabilities

    Write capabilities CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL
Config Manager Error Code Device is working properly
    Config Manager User Config FALSE

    Media Loaded FALSE
    SCSI Bus 0
    SCSI Logical Unit 0
    SCSI Port 0
    SCSI Target Id 1
    Status OK
    -----------------------

I have never ever seen any discs(DVD, CD) labled on their covers with 'CD-ROM' OR 'DVD-ROM'. However, when inserting some non-blank discs labled on their covers with (DVD-R, CD-R) into the otpical drive, I see 'DVD-ROM, CD-ROM'. Let me give you this scenario::

First: I really have created the HP Factory Recovery disc by their own Recovery Manger tool onto discs labled on their covers with DVD-R. However, after creating the Recovery Discs onto the DVD-R discs, whenever inserting those discs, I see 'DVD-ROM' as in this screen shot.

second: Another CD labled on its cover with CD-R, however, when I have created the System Repair Disc for Windows 64bit' on that CD-R, then whenever I inserted into the CD/DVD Drive, I noticed CD-ROM(screen shot below).

  • I think they are shown as "ROM" because they are finalized and can't be written to or erased.
