Who uses DVD anymore?

So I created this 8:3GB compilation with 9 chapters & a rather complex menu and Nero almost had a nervous breakdown. I selected AVCHD - Card and had a 16Gb card in the slot but it kept telling me that I was over the 4.3GB limit. Really? 4.3 gets you nowhere at 1080p. I also discovered that you have to be "advanced" to have more than six buttons on one menu page, Silly, needs sorting.
While I'm on the subject of silly, any ideas how I can stop Nero of all persuasions creating "My Documents" & "My Pictures" folders in C\Users\ every time it boots? I keep no data on C. I've changed the minimal options for defaults, Destination, Temp etc (I have a Temp partition) but it still goes looking for files in the folder it only just created itself.
Not serious, just shows a lack of imagination & it can be a bit frustrating winding all the way down to P\ every time.

  • Why did'nt you alter the settings to use a dual layer disc at 8.7 Gb?

  • If writing to a USB ... there does seem to be a limit set to the size. (Regardless of the file system format on the USB.)

I think Nero needs to investigate this limitation.

  • Lucky Phil/Wither

Maybe I should read the post properly instead of giving wrong info/stupid comments.

  • I’m thinking about uninstalling
It happens with HDD too! Just tried to push 5.66 GB into an empty 20 GB partition and there it was again "Your project requires more disc space than available on the selected destination device...."
I clicked "do it anyway" and up came a projected processing time of five & a half hours for what was essentially a straightforward copying job: the format of the videos did not need to be changed & I had "Smart encoding" activated. My machine copies at about 1GB/min.
What with that, a cutter that can be up to 3 frames out, a cross fade that adds frames if you trim instead of cut, no normalise & as far as I can make out, no reverse play, I'm beginning to think I wasted my money.

  • There is no reverse play in Nero. Omega Tester posted a convoluted and time consuming procedure for doing it. Doubt that you would be interested.

Nero Video doesn't do a copy. We would have to look at the log file to see what it's doing in regards to encoding. It depends on the files that you're starting with and the type of project you have selected. If you've changed the Recording Format Options, that would also enhance the time and space required for both encoding and the final project. However, you would have to let the process proceed.

Nero warns that you might need to have 50 GB of free space for some projects. However, that's not the size of the final project, that's the amount of space you would need on your C: drive if you installed on your C: drive.

We haven't addressed any of your other concerns- for instance, we haven't talked about how to put more than 6 menu buttons on a page. You have to do that in Advanced Menu Customization. You basically have to reduce the size of one button and then copy it as many times as you desire. Of course, there a limit on how many buttons you can get on a page to make it usuable during playback. In another thread, I showed that you could get up to 20 buttons on a page. After duplicating the button, you would have to relink each button to the video or Chapter that you want that button to play.

If you don't want to have it creating new folders every time it starts, the only way I can think of doing that is to go into the Folder options and leave them blank. However, I think this would then make you have to designate the location every time you do anything like exporting, burning or saving to your HDD. You can change the defaults but it seems that you've already done that. If you have v2015 or v2016, you could ask tech support about that.

The size of the final file would depend on the format of the original files and what you've selected for the project type. If you've changed the Recording Format Options, that would not only affect the size of the final file but the time for encoding.

We haven't address your other concerns.

For instance, if you want more than 6 buttons on a page, you would have to use Advanced editing in the menu Customization. Basically, you would reduce the size of one button and duplicate it as many times as desired. Of course, there is a limit on how small the buttons can be and for them to be usable during normal playback. In another thread, we showed that you could get up to as many as 20 buttons on a page. When you're done duplicating the buttons, you would have to recreate the link to the desired video or chapter for each button.

In regards to it creating new folders each time it starts, I don't really think it creates new ones if they already exist. The only way I can think of stopping that is to make the Folder options blank. However, that would force you to designate the location for exporting, burning or saving to your HDD. Nero remembers the last location you specified for those operations. If you have v2015 or v2016, you could ask tech support about it.

  • Sorry, "the button issue" wasn't really an issue for me; I just think it is silly to make such a thing "advanced" thereby frightening off people who are new to the game. After more than thirty years of this (I built my first PC over Christmas 1982), I think of myself as "advanced", if only in age.
Something you said above (v.2&3) made me kick myself, though. If I want to stop Nero writing to files in C\, all I have to do is leave the folders there & change the permissions. I tried denying read & write but Nero wouldn't start. Allow read & deny write in \computer name\profile seems to work.
