Why can't we embed subtitles to our mp4 videos?

I try to embed subtitles while ripping a DVD in Nero Recode 2018, but despite the program giving me subtitle option to do so, the resulting mp4 file always ends up without any subtitles embedded. How do I get the subtitles to appear in my file? By the way, I just saw Nero Recode 2015 didn't recorgnize subtitle embedding ever, and I'm getting a little worried this one won't either. And I bought it specially for that. You really should do something about it since you're alienating your consumer base and it's not fair people with hearing problems (for instance) cannot use those features.

  • Hi-

Nero was never able to "embed" subtitles. However, you could add subtitles in v11 (I think) and earlier. That feature was then removed. I don't know why.

The option you're referring to is to select which subtitle, in a video which already has more than one, to use.
    • "Nero was never able to "embed" subtitles."

I found out "hardcode" is a more accurate term for what I wanted to do. Thanks!

"However, you could add subtitles in v11 (I think) and earlier. That feature was then removed. I don't know why. "

      That's what I've heard.... it's a shame...

"The option you're referring to is to select which subtitle, in a video which already has more than one, to use."

I'm not sure I'm getting you... which subtitle to use where?
    • If you have a video which contains subtitles, which would be in different languages, you can select the language you want to use in Recode.

According to the Nero Recode Manual, one would think it's just easy-peasy to add subtitles. It says: "Click the button of a title to select or deselect the language or subtitles (for DVD-Video) you want to copy"

I do this after the DVD is imported. I can't be any more clear that I want the subtitle to be English (and for whatever the reason on this particular disc for good measure, English and English can be added, so I left both in).

After selecting OK and waiting over a half hour for the video to rip, I'm left with no subtitles. I select the subtitles option in my movie player, and it asks if I want to add a subtitle file (which I don't have). I purchased Nero so that I could bypass this sort of work such as obtaining a file and adding it. It's on the disc. I'm doing what the manual tells me to do.

If I'm doing something wrong, or completely missing a step, then please let me know. I'll be most grateful to whomever can give me the exact pathway on how to add subtitles.

  • Yes. You said: "The option you're referring to is to select which subtitle, in a video which already has more than one, to use."

This is what I'm referring to. This particular disc has English and Spanish as options, or no subtitles at all. When I play the disc on a stand-alone DVD player or on my computer, I can select how I wish to view it.

When the disc is imported, it allows me to check/uncheck the subtitles before ripping. If something like this is a function in the program, one would think it would reflect the end-result after ripping to see the subtitle that is selected.

Are you saying that selecting all subtitles (non-embedded) are also not working in this program upon ripping?

  • You have to go to Options, Output to select the subtitle language you want to use in the recode of the file.

  • I’m thankful
Where is "Options" on the import screen? (See my picture attached in my original message). Or, can you give me the pathway how to get to Options then Output?
    EDIT
Oops.. found it, but upon checking, I do have "English" checked as a preselect. Is there something else missing?

    • Why is it stripping "soft subtitles" at all when the settings are all there and checked accordingly to make sure it recodes properly?
    • I don't know for sure. However, way back when one could add subtitles, they weren't embedded.

You could ask tech support about this situation by going to

      http://www.nero.com/enu/support/conta...

      and submitting the contact form.

  • I wanted to share the response I got from Nero Support about this. A bit grim for someone like me because I don't know anything about SRT files. I know that's the file where the subtitle is, but how to get a hold of it in the first place I have no idea.

  • I seem to vaguely remember this response in another thread a long time ago. Pretty ingenious.

Do you have a separate .srt file for your video?

Since it's a text file, I'm wondering if tech support is asking you to create a text effect in Nero Video which is the same length as your video and adding the subtitle to the text effect. That would seem to do what you want but you would need to position the subtitle so that it appears "on" the correct part of your video. We can tell you how to do that.

I'm not sure why they mentioned burning it separately or using Burning Rom. If what I mentioned is what they intended, the whole thing can be done in Nero Video.

  • I am not sure that Mpeg4 supports SRT embedding unless you use a program like Handbrake to embed the SRT file. Handbrake is free as well...
