I’m frustrated

Why won't my Nero copied Audio CD's play on my CD player?

Audio CD's that I copy on NERO play fine on my computer but will not play on
my Sony player. The machine tries to play them but after about a minute of silence going by on the player's clock. It just stops.

My suspicion is that disks are being copied in a different format than the original disks which are about 20 years old and were made on a Sony CD recorder.

I am using NERO 9.

  • I didn't look back to see if I mentioned it but, when you do a disc copy, it burns an exact copy of the original. It doesn't need to be able to read CD-Text. It's basically imaging the disc and the files which define what's on the disc and where, like the TOC (table of contents).

  • I did a disk copy on an old disk and N9 read the text on the copy ok. It's just the new disks whose text N9 won't read.

I know the text is there because the Sony player reads them OK.

I don't think it's me here because as soon as I click on burn audio CD, N9 immediately attempts to read the disk and asks me to select which tracks to save to hard drive. They come up as "unknown Title" and "Unknown Artist".

Is there anything on the N9 Analyze Disk program that may provide a clue to what's happening (or not happening here)?

  • As I asked earlier, did you verify that Gracenote is enabled?

Open Windows Explorer, select the drive with the disc in it. Right click and select Open. Does it show the title and artist?

  • Gracenote does not read the titles but does give me the option to enter the data manually.

Using Explorer, still no titles and also titles do not appear when I play the CD on the computer.

  • At the time you made your discs, Nero used a different database called FreeBurn. It isn't active any more (it was taken over by a different entity but I don't know what they're doing with it). Apparently, whatever files were burned to the disc are not in the GraceNote database.

It sounds to me like your drive doesn't support CD-Text.

  • The new drive will read the text on my old audio CD's from around y2k but
not the ones I have created on Sony in the last 2-3 weeks.

It will read the text on N9 created copy disk type copies of the y2k disks created on either machine.

Problem is...after making all 250+ audio disks around y2k, I did not use Sony to create any more audio disks till 2-3 weeks ago.

So whatever the problem is, I can't say for sure that it's actual cause is recent.

Anyway, for my newly stored .wav files I can simply change their file names from unknown title-unknown artist to whatever the title should be. Pain in the butt yes but certainly do-able. I did try it on a couple of tracks and they did edit OK.

  • I am trying to view the still photos on my timeline. When the file was a .nvc," Open with" would let me select Nero Vision and it would work just like you said it would.

But this file is .avi and clicking "open with" does not bring up Nero Vision as an option. I can import it into the Nero Vision but the stills only show up on the playback screen, not the timeline.

Can I do this with the .avi format?

  • You would have to set Nero Vision as the default for a .avi in the Control Panel, Default Programs. However, I don't think you want Nero Video as the default. It should be Nero MediaHome since it has a player.

This is a long thread and I've lost track of what you mean by the "stills". After you imported the .avi into Vision, did you add it to the timeline?
Would you provide a screenshot which shows what you're seeing in Nero Vision?

  • What I had was a timeline with several .jpg stills that displayed prior to the video starting and then resuming after the video is completed.

Each .jpg would display in it's place on the timeline as well as the first frame of the video

The reason for this is that the video is incomplete in relation to its audio file so I use audio1 for all audio and set the video's audio to 0%. That is to say that the video portion is a only a clip of the movie while the audio track contains audio for the entire movie that the clip came from.

When I made my DVD, the Nero Project file became a .avi file which I can import from my hard drive or the DVD.

When I had the Nero project file, If I imported it, only the first frame of the video would display on the timeline but if I clicked on the file instead, I could select open with Nero Vision and the stills would then be displayed on the timeline.

Now If I click the .avi file that I now have, the open with options do not include Nero Vision. I need to get to the photos that are no longer displayed on the timeline again so that I can edit them.

  • The only way to get an .avi file in Nero Vision is to use the Export, Export Video to File. If all the stills were in the project when you created the .avi, then the stills will be there. The question is why they're not shown on the timeline. If you click on the magnifying glass with the "+" under the timeline, can you see them?

Nero doesn't do anything with original files. They should still be located where they were when you added them to your project. Did you delete them? If you did, we can still get them back.

When a photo is displayed in the preview screen, pause the playback. Click on the Camera icon underneath the screen. The photo will be saved to

  • Clicking the magnifying glass only changes the scale on the timeline and nothing else.

I opened Nero Vision and imported the file which is a .avi.

The picture files have to be there because they display as expected when I play the movie. How the heck did this thing get to be a .avi in the first place? Prior to that it was a Nero Project File.

A bit later I made another movie by adding elements to this one and it ended up as a .nvc. Why is this one different?. I just now opened it with Nero Vision, clicked edit and everything displays on the timeline just fine. .

In both cases the file extension changed when I added the box that launches the movie and burned a DVD but I have no idea why.

I checked my recycle bin and there are no Nero files there.

  • If you zoom in far enough, you should be able to see the photos. They don't take up a lot of display space on the timeline relative to the video so you might only see the video until you do that. That was the point.

What box did you add to launch the movie? Please be very specific.

  • The launch box on only displays when I launch from a DVD on my DVD player.. It is one of the defaults that comes with N9 and is called orbit. When I bring into N9, the first still photo is the first item on the timeline, not the launch box

When I double click the movies on the computer, the player comes up showing the first still photo, not the launch box...

Since the video portion is sandwiched between the still photos, the only photo
that appears on the .avi movie timeline is the first one that is located at time 00.

Expanding or compressing the timeline will not reveal the photos, I understand what you are getting at here because my on .nvc. movie which is about 7 minutes long, I can see the still photos expand/compress as I change the timeline scale.

  • Orbit is a Menu template. You wouldn't see it on the timeline. It shouldn't do anything in regards to causing the project to become .avi.

Would you mind uploading your .avi to filedropper.com and posting the link here so I can test it?

  • Actually. I cant.

I obtained the video clip portion (about half of the entire performance) by downloading it around 2004. A couple of days later the site was forced to remove it because the rights to it are owned by the company that currently owns the old Ed Sullivan Show footage.

I have tried on several occasions to purchase the entire performance or even that entire Ed Sullivan episode and have either been offered a copy with a time stamp on it for a very high price, flat outright denied because I am not in the entertainment business i.e. they consider me a collector, or informed that I could buy it with a license to broadcast it to the public...also expensive..

It involves a Japanese group called The Tokyo Happy Coats that I was very friendly with while stationed in Japan in the 1960's. They came to the US in 1964
and appeared on the Al Hirt and Ed Sullivan TV shows in 1965 & 1966, Later they cut some records on the king label and then disbanded in the 1970's.

The reason I have the entire audio for the performance is that Dad taped the Ed Sullivan performance when it aired in 1966 on a old Sony TC-200 Reel to Reel machine.

  • I appreciate and enjoy the history but it doesn't do anything to identify why you can't see the photos on the timeline. Of course, I've given you a way to save the photos, if you want to recreate the project. Without the file to work with, I'm pretty much unable to help.

  • Funny, I replied to this one yesterday AM but it's back today.

I can recreate the movie fairly easily as the video, which is mp4 is on my hard drive as are all of the stills.

Thank you very much for your help.

At any rate, If you're good with what you have, I'm glad.
