Why am I getting small white squares in vision 12 output

I am experiencing small white squares when I use Nero 12 Vision to author a compliant DVD folder and do not know what is different from using my previous Nero 10. I am using MPG2 files for the input, and have the Nero Vision set to the following

(1st Tab marked General)
Video Mode = NTSC
Smart Encoding = Disabled
Second Tab marked DVD-Video see picture below

99% of the time I only author standard 4.7Gb size files

When watching the finished video DVD which typically will have 2-4 videos in the menu, the white squares appear like this........(this screen shot taken from the folder/file on the PC - not from the burned DVD)

The input files generated by Pinnacle Studio 15 do NOT have the little white square present - they are created by Nero Vision 12 - any ideas?

  • I messed up on inserting the screen shots - here is the one of the actual rendered DVD compliant file ready for burning

  • First: This look like if the source files contains errors - where does the source files come from? Are this tv recordings?

Second: Is your nero installation up to date? What is the exact versionof neor video (see about box)?

  • I’m frustrated
I have gone back and examined the source MPG2 files (source to Nero Vision) which were created in Pinnacle Studio 15. When getting to the min/sec of where the squares show up on the DVD playing back on TV, I went back and examined the source frame by frame inside Studio 15 and they do not exist inside of Studio 15 or on the finished MPG2 file. Using Win Media player to view the finished MPG2 file I am not able to go frame by frame but still viewing the min/sec of interest the white squares do not show up.

The Nero Vision 12 DVD authoring tool is definitely the source of these white squares.

Yes these files are old TV programs and are imported from the VHS tapes to Studio 15, edited, and then finished in MPG2 DVD compliant format by Studio 15. The second screen shot shows the frame width, height, data rate, frame rate, audio bit rate.

The thing is I have made hundreds of these files and DVDs and this was never a problem using the identical setup until I updated to Nero 12.

When I go to check for updates the only ones listed are 6 'CHM' help updates which I never use and have not bothered to download. The last one is Nero Rescue Agent 12 again something I never have used and see no need for.

  • duane,

Would it be possible for you to create and then upload a short source file example to one of the cloud services?

If you've kept the VHS tapes, have you tried repeating the process on one of the tapes that you had success with when using version 10?

  • I don't know what the cloud is.

Do you mean could I re-author a DVD using some of my old MPG2 files that worked fine in Nero Vision version 10? I no longer have the tapes but I could use Handbrake to extract the MP4 equivalent file for each tv program - what would we be looking for? It is not a tape issue at all because these white squares do not appear in the tape capture and editing process in Studio 15, NOR do the white squares appear in the finished MPG2 file created by Studio.

It is when I combine two-four of these MPG2 files in Nero Video 12 to author a DVD "vob file set" for later burning using Nero Burning ROM. It shows up when I play the VOB file set on my PC and then of course in the finished DVD on my TV. The only flash across the screen for a couple of frames - very fast. They are hard to find on my PC when viewing the final DVD vob set because there is no way to go frame by frame using Win Media player.

What I might be able to do is take the MPG2 files over to my son-in-laws house who has my older pc machine that still has Nero Vision 10 on it, and try authoring the latest set of MPG2 files that now exhibit white squares. Is that what you are asking?
    • Performing the same process on version 10 and having success should help you get Nero's full attention.

If you want to upload examples to the cloud, there's the services mentioned by Wither 1 below and others. If you have an Amazon account, there's AmazonCloud. There are also free accounts available at dropbox, pogoplug, Nero BackItUp, and others.

  • The cloud means internet. One such service is filedropper.com. SkyDrive is another.

When you open Nero Video to create your project, are you selecting Make Advanced Movie? If so, what do you select in the subsequent screen for the resolution of the project?

  • Actually I have to admit I just double click the last .nvc file and then delete that last three MPG2 files and load up new ones for the next DVD creation. I have all the past .nvc files even from before the install of Video ver 12. If I open one of those older .nvc files what should I look for?

It opens to this screen from where I dump these files and import three new ones, then I go "next" and customize the buttons and titles. It has been a really long time that I have had to go in and see how to set it up - the change occurred when I went from older version of Vision/Video to the new 12.

  • The only difference in the video setup on an older .nvc file and the ones created under the new ver 12 is that the "smart encoding" is disabled. I remember having to set that up this way because the Edit Menu on ver 12 with smart encoding enabled would not allow me to burn a 4.7Gb version of the VOB file set. The bar would show over in the red as being too large. This is for approx. three 1.6Gb files that I purposely set to the resolution to fit 3-60min videos on one disk (a rate of about 3.4Mbps).

    NEW VIDEO 12 .nvc file

NEW VIDEO 12 DVD options in .nvc file

Old vision (10 or 11) .nvc file

Old version (10 or 11) DVD options in .nvc file

I went to change the setting for smart encoding and it gave me a warning that ALL files would be analyzed and changed so I cancelled. I have 283 old an ver 12 >nvc files and I didn't want to take the chance I would be changing them all just for a screen shot to post.

  • Omega Tester- SmartEncoding will determine whether or not the source files or the defined project requires the files/project to be re-encoded to match the defined project. It seems to me that you stated it backwards.

Duane- what is just said applies to your project. The files "may be' larger if it has to encode them to satisfy the type of project you're creating- for example, DVD-Video.

I suspect that you're getting the squares because the original video has a low resolution and Nero Video is encoding to a higher resolution (720x...) for DVD-Video.

Here is an example of SmartEncoding or Not SmartEncoding in Nero 12 Video. Again, files will be encoded if SmartEncoding is disabled. Enabling SmartEncoding will allow videos compatible with the current project type to be copied without re-encoding.

  • Here is an example of SmartEncoding or Not SmartEncoding in Nero 12 Video.

The right pane is what my old version used to show and if I had created a DVD set that was a tad too large for the 4.7Gb disk Nero Vision would pick on of the three (seemed random) and show it as 0% while the other two would be 100%. That always worked just fine and I never saw any white squares. NOW with Video 12 and smart encoding set to disabled, all input files show 0%

Here is a what you requested

  • duane,

The complaints about SmartEncoding/Automatic (Fit to disc) came fast and furious when Nero 12 Video was released. The behavior you describe was how it worked in version 11 also. In other words, if SmartEncoding (copying) would occupy too much space then "Automatic (Fit to disc)" would force some titles to be re-encoded at a lower quality to stay within the disc space limitations.

After numerous complaints about "Automatic (Fit to disc)" malfunctioning in Nero 12, a revision changed the way the combination of SmartEncoding and Automatic (Fit to disc) operate. Namely, if SmartEncoding of all eligible titles would result in a space problem, a warning is issued, but no "Automatic (fit to disc)" quality reduction is done. I call this NotSoSmartEncoding!

So, if NotSoSmartEncoding would result is a space overrun, it's up to the user to find a solution!

Solution 1: Disable SmartEncoding and wait while all titles are re-encoded to the lower quality determined by "Automatic (fit to disc)".

Solution 2: Delete titles until NotSoSmartEncoding shows no disc space warning!

Solution 3: Same as 1 except choose a quality setting manually instead of using "Automatic (fit to disc)".

There may be others, but I can't imagine any being as good as the pre-version 12 method.

I think you've said you are using "Solution 1" and that results in the "white spots." I guess I would try doing one of the problem titles independently and writing to a hard drive folder. Assuming that has no white spots, I suppose Solution 2 would be in order, but that's really jumping ahead.

  • Are these the .vob files before running them through Studio 15?

No, Studio 15 has no way of opening a .vob container. These files shown in the post above are the Studio 15 generated MPG-2 files which I select MPG-2, and then customize the bit rate to about 3400kbps to get a 55min program down to about 1.4-1.5Gb which is 1/3 of a 180min DVD (4.3Gb). I have attached a screenshot of that selection.

The only time I would work with the .vob files is when I record a DVD program on my DVR and then I put it in the PC optical reader and use "handbrake" SW to get the stream out of the vob which is inside the "Video" folder on the +-RW disk. With the appropriate settings in Handbrake this gives me a MP4 file which I then open in Studio 15, cut out the promos and advertising, etc. and then generate an MPG2 file (generally at 3400 kbps) and wait to combine it with two other MPG2 files in Nero Video to author a full DVD disk (of about 180min at analog style TV quality).

  • I'm a little confused about what you're calling a VOB two posts back. If you create a DVD-Video project, the result is a Video_TS folder. Inside it, are the .vts......vob files which are the actual video streams. What files are you actually providing to Studio 15?

Is is possible to upload one of the files that you provide to Studio 15 and one of the mpeg-2 files created by Studio 15 to filedropper.com. If so, please do so and provide the links here.

  • Most of the files that I use Studio for are captured by studio itself from a VHS player fed through a hardware codec. So there is no file to show you that is fed to Studio.

On rare occasions I record a current 2014 program off the air on my DVR and it creates a set of files on a +-RW disk like the attached image (file "DVR file structure")

To get that into Studio I have to use Handbrake (free, found at http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php) to strip out the video/audio stream from the VIDEO_TS folder. I suspect I am not using the proper terminology. I need to use Handbrake to get the stream out of VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_02_1.VOB, etc. When I set up Handbrake for this exercise I choose MPEG-4 as the video codec to use since Studio sometimes gags on H.264 (or at best it is extremely slow even on my Xeon 8 core CPU E5-1650 @ 3.5Ghz). After the video/audio file has been created it is easily opened inside Studio where I do the editing (file "handbrake set up")

I could do as you requested for a Handbrake type exercise but for a raw VHS video capture the size is going to huge. I can create a small portion I guess and just render that in Studio and pass it up to filedropper.com - DO I NEED TO SIGN UP AND HAVE A PSWD?

  • I see that I have to pay to sign up for Filedropper and I really have no need of such a service - I do not host videos for anyone else to see. When I had a grandson playing all sorts of High School sports I paid for a Vimeo account and you could see some of the video uploads there - they were all generated by Studio (various versions over the years). Vimeo got finicky about having to upload "round" pixels and I cannot not now remember how I had to set up Studio to create those specific files as Vimeo did not want MPG2 files. Think I used MPG-4 but had to make sure I customized the audio and video bit rates to accomdate Vimeo standards. I think you can view this currently even though my subscription has run out. https://vimeo.com/36715719 - not sure you can see what you want at this site.

Use that disc. Open Nero Video, Make Advanced Movie. Select Import, Import Disc. It will then let you import your vts...vob files. Drag all three to the timeline and play them. Are there any problems?

You're going through a lot of effort with Studio 15 and Handbrake that you can do in Nero Video. For instance, you mentioned removing advertisement. Did you know that Nero Video has the Ad Spotter which will automatically detect advertisements? You can also capture to Nero Video.
