I’m frustrated

wow and flutter

I use Nero burning rom 2016. I hear a kind of wow and flutter on my burned cd's when there are very low or very loud passages in the music (classical). Besides this I find the soundquality of Nero is super! Can I change something in my installations to avoid this noisy rumours?

  • Hi Ludo-

I'm only aware of this because of using turntables. The wow and flutter is caused by the equipment either used for recording or for playback. Seems to me, you're going to have this unless you check the specs for your drive and/or player, against other equipment and use the ones with better specs.

  • Thank you for your kind answer, but maybe "wow and flutte"r isn't the wright term, I'm not sure. Strange is that I have not that problem when burning with "cd burner xp" instead of Nero! And this playing both on the same equipment (Bose, Teac or Panasonic).
    • What you described is a perfect example of wow and flutter. For digital files, I think it's called something else.

I don't know how you can easily resolve this in Nero Express or Nero Burning Rom. There are filters you can apply but I don't think any of them would help you with your problem. You could also modify your original audio files using something like pitch control in WaveEditor but I don't think you want to get into that.

Perhaps you can run it past the experts at technical support. Go to nero.com, support, contact, technical support. Fill out and submit the contact form.
    • Thank you for the suggestion. I took contact with the experts of Nero and will wait for their response

  • Compression has that effect on the extremes - so you audio may be compressed too hard.

So a modulated uneven effect may occur on level that could be interpreted as flutter.

MP3 is a compressed format in itself, and may have this effect. So if original files are MP3 part of issue may be there.

But ReplayGain may also play a roll when burning. Had Nero Express 6 many years ago, but don't remember what settings there are for this. I would look for some dynamics setting of some sort.

DVD players I have has settings for compression of audio for video, whether to have large dynamics or not etc - but should not affect pure audio playback normally.
